Get Ready for a Biblical Paradigm Shift
There is a growing fascination with near-death experiences and firsthand accounts of visiting heaven and even hell. It reveals a need for discovering our eternal destiny, but it also reveals a lack of trust in the sufficiency of Scripture. Randy Alcorn's book, Heaven, proves that there is more than enough in the pages of the Bible to satisfy our curiosity and whet our appetite for discovering all we need to know about Heaven. This is a condensed version of his much larger book, Heaven, and is organized into 50 daily readings. Each day's reading covers 2-3 short pages, includes a devotional/applicational question, and ends with an exceptional prayer for the day.Alcorn's purpose in his larger book is to basically produce a two-fold paradigm shift:(1) To convince his readers that the popular conception of heaven is merely transitional and the ultimate heaven is the eternal heaven on earth in the New Creation.(2) To cause his readers to begin to imagine what heaven may be like by considering the present creation liberated from the curse of sin and made that much better by being recreated with resurrection power.Amazon reviews of his book, Heaven, seem to fall into one of four categories:(1) People who have made the paradigm shift and whose eyes have been opened to how much more the Bible teaches about heaven than they previously realized. [The vast majority].(2) People who do not want anyone messing with their present views/opinions/assumptions about heaven. [Be prepared for this book to unsettle many people and cause very emotional questions and discussions](3) People who are of the persuasion that to discuss anything other than God on his throne and the Lamb who was slain is utter blasphemy. [Alcorn makes clear that heaven is about the person of Christ and the presence of God but he is also very passionate about making it clear that it is also about a real and material place, the New Creation.](4) People who may be in categories #2 or #3 above and criticize Alcorn for encouraging his readers to use their imagination to reflect on the glories of heaven here on earth. [Such criticism fails to notice how often Alcorn uses words like "maybe, " "possibly," and "seems," while all along using the Scriptures as the boundary for his imagination and reflections.I have found Alcorn's teaching on the Heaven to be biblical, balanced, and bold. It will motivate you to be a "Berean" and check what he says against the Bible. It strikes a great balance between teaching what the Bibles says and what Alcorn thinks could be valid conclusions and anticipations. It is bold in challenging people to reconsider what they have thought about heaven (or how little they have thought about it) and to become more heavenly minded to be more earthly good! One or two weaknesses are evident in his larger work that do not necessarily show up as much in this shorter devotional edition.(1) Even though Alcorn is a premillienialist in his eschatology, at times he will confuse passages that address the Millennial Kingdom of Christ with the Eternal State in the New Creation. He could be clearer at times in this regard.(2) He larger book tends to be redundant and repetitive at times. This devotional edition could be used in a multiple ways:(1) Personal devotional material to experience a biblical paradigm shift about Heaven.(2) Church-wide devotional material for sermon series on Heaven.(3) Small group devotional material to be sued with the study guide and DVD lessons.(4) Family devotional material for family discipleship.(5) Gifts to all ages of people in all kinds of circumstances from graduation to grief. One does not have to agree with every aspect of Alcorn's teaching on Heaven to benefit from it. Read it and see if you do not experience a paradigm shift that is not just biblical but also practical. The result may very well be that you will long for Heaven on the New Earth more than you ever have, while being motivated to live for Christ on this present earth more than you ever did.

Spurgeon's words were updated for our understanding
Very excellent book only IF READ! It will give you an understanding of Heaven every person who believes they're going to Heaven must read! Believe me when I say MANY people who believe they are going are not! I have spent years resolving this for myself and Randy Alcorn's work in these books will help you affirm your confidence from God by showing the Scripture verses and what they mean for those that wrongly believe their works help them in any way! They won't! Only after do they benefit you! Know the difference!

One of the most insightful, authoritative books that I have ever read on heaven.
Excellent read! The most authoritative, insightful book or any other form of reading (except the Bible, obviously) that I have ever read on heaven! The points he makes about heaven are backed up by Bible verses. I never realized that people who are dead are already in heaven, just not the final one, when Jesus returns to earth and the new earth becomes heaven. The earth returns to the state that it was prior to the first sin in the Garden of Eden. It is very comforting to understand these things more.I also very much like the Sarah Young books which write as if God is directly speaking to us in the first person. That has had an astounding impact on my life. She backs them up with the supporting scripture. I have to say that the first one, “Jesus Calling: 10th Anniversary Edition”, is my favorite, because not only does it show what verses it is based on, it has the actual verses below it. I think I have read them all. I don’t just read one page a day as a short devotional every morning. The way things are in the world today, I need more than one to get me through. I underline the parts that speak the most to me. I don’t know if some might call this an inappropriate place to do it, but I don’t care; it works for me. I don’t think God minds: I put it next to a place where I am a “captive audience”; in the bathroom on a table next to a “throne” of a different type!Once I am through, I begin again! The information doesn’t get old or become less poignant.

Brings peace to a hurting heart
I read this book while my husband was dying of cancer. It taught me many things I didn't know (even though I've been a Christian my whole life!) and brought me such peace.
