A History of Korea (Palgrave Essential Histories)

Quite good. A bit heavy going, but if you want to learn about Korean history, this is the best one around. I thought I knew a lot about Korea, but I learned quite a lot. I also highly recommend A History of East Asia, which treats China, Korea and Japan as one unit in the unfolding of Asian history, united by their mutual use of "Chinese characters" and the huge popularity of Buddhism. The two books go well together.

A pretty good history in a very uncrowded field since there are not a lot of general histories of Korea in English. It is either translated or written by a non-native English speaker, so at times it can be a bit difficult to read, and there are some other oddities, but nonetheless there isn't much competition, so I recommend it if you are trying to build a shelf on Korean history.

I bought this for my Korean History course. It was useful for the papers that I had to write for the class. It is easy to understand and doesn't put you to sleep. I wouldn't buy it if I didn't need it for my class, but I would recommend this book to people who are really interested in Korea's history.

It brings Korean history alive! I never read any Korean history before this, but after reading this, I feel well informed. There are no pictures, but it doesn't need pictures because it is written exceedingly well. Every history book should be written like this one!

I would certainly recommend this book as an introduction to Korean history. I particularly enjoyed its focus upon cultural and technological changes rather than listing dates of famous battles.
