Director Gus Van Sant's audacious, near shot-for-shot remake of the classic Hitchcock shocker stars Anne Heche as Marion Crane, a woman who embezzles $400,000 from her employer, but finds terror in the shower of her room at the Bates Motel, run by the eccentric Norman Bates (Vince Vaughn). William H. Macy, Viggo Mortensen and Julianne Moore also star. 104 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English.

Shot for Shot?
I remember when this was released and Vince Vaughn was attacked. It’s a bold move to copy the master of suspense, but I think Van Zant did a decent job. I think if he shot in Bkack and White it might have been easier to compare? But that would have taken more time and skill. You don’t just shut the color off and the movie works in black and white. There’s a reason Orson Welles got in writing an agreement Citizen Kane would never be colorized. Not only was that forward thinking by a 25 year old Welles. He knew the skill it took to make it one of the greatest movies of all time and any film colorized by an idiot like Ted Turner proved how little he knew about film.

Much better the 2nd time around...
It is commonly known by Moviegoers the world around that some films are not really appreciated until years after they leave the box office. Psycho 1998 is one of those films, It received a bad reputation way before it even came out. I regrettably was one of those people and I admit I was wrong. Most people just jumped on the "hate a remake" bandwagon and that's because the original was such a coveted classic. I remember watching the original with my Grandmother and my cousins back when I was 7 years old. Many people can tell a similar memory of when they saw the original so it wasn't a matter of the remake being bad it was more a matter of no one wanted to see they're memories tampered with.PSYCHO 1998 is a frame for frame update and that is all! Seriously take the original version and play it next to the 1998 remake and be amazed. The 1998 remake made me appreciate and want to watch the Original even more. So, in the end don't give too much flack to the remake of PSYCHO it really is worth watching.

Poor casting.
If you're going to remake one of the greatest and most iconic films of all time, you need to make sure your casting is on point. This remake is proof that if you have even a few poorly cast actors, the whole ship is not going to float.Viggo Mortensen being an exception. He's an improvement over the ever wooden James Gavin. Julianne Moore holds her own, although overplays it a bit. William H. Macy is always good. However, Anne Heche really seems unable to grasp the subtle nuances of her character, the way the marvelous Janet Leigh does in the original. There's just something missing in her performance. Same goes for Vince Vaughn. Although I think it a somewhat interesting choice to play Norman Bates, he just couldn't seem to find it - certainly not compared to Anthony Perkins, who was so brilliant in the original, it literally destroyed the rest of his career. The final scene is a fine example. When Perkins played it, you truly believe he is deeply psychotic. Although he has no lines, his nuanced facial expressions are convincingly that of the deeply disturbed, and it's disturbing to watch. Vaughan just can't seem to get it going, thus, the final scene in the remake, crucial to the film coming off, falls flat. This is really the story with the entire picture. You cannot expect the same level of performance from actors that simply aren't in the same class as those of the original. Shot by shot with color and some added nudity and gore isn't enough. You need high quality performances. If you're a kid coming to this after watching Bates Motel on Netflix, you might be ok. If you are a big fan of Hitchcock and have seen all his masterpieces, (like Psycho), you're in for an offensive yawn. 3 stars, mostly because they kept Bernard Hermann's brilliant score and the Saul Bass titles.

Psycho
This isn't the original movie, but the remake. I remember watching this movie in theaters when it first released. I haven't seen it in quite some time. The movie still holds up. It's pretty much a shot for shot remake.

Good remake
I love this remake because van Sant intended to do it shot for shot as in the Hitchcock original. What a provocative idea! And I don't get the grousing about the cast. Vince Vaughn was great as Norman Bates—maybe not quite as kooky but a lot sexier. Same for Anne Heche, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore. William H. Macy was to my mind a better Arbogast than Martin Balsam. Casting Rose Marie as the voice of Mrs. Bates was a wonderful idea. It's available now at a low price for purchase, so check it out!
