How are the usb devices emulated for the computer not currently in use? are they essentially disconnected from the computer when not being used?

Correct. The not in use computer essentially thinks the devices are disconnected. There can be a bit of a delay for devices to be recognized when you switch. Same as if you were plugging them in fresh. Works great by the way. I use this to switch a wireless keyboard and mouse between two devices. I've also used thumb drives and usb headphones and it worked great. Personally very happy with it.

Can anyone verify if this switch does or does not have a port for an external power supply?

It has a port for adding supplemental microUSB power. It does not come with a cable or wall plug.

Edit rig and gaming rig on the same desk, razer chroma keyboard and mouse....is there any lag issues with the keyboards or mouse in gaming?

I have been able to play CS:GO and other games with no noticeable input lag. I use a Corsair K70 and Logitech G502 so I would assume that the Razer keyboard and mouse will function just fine.

Can this be used for sharing one display monitor by two Mac laptops?
