Excellent
The truth that slavery exists today is hard to believe and bear, but it is presented in a straightforward and digestible manner in this book. This book made connections that has made me feel directly responsible for people suffering today. The hardship of so many is in some ways the result of my many countless small and seemingly inconsequential actions and inactions. This book deepened my humility and sense of gratitude for my circumstance, and hardened my intolerance to the greed, entitlement, complacency, ignorance, dishonesty and deception that is so pervasive in our society. I hope for a broadened and renewed awareness of these types and degrees of injustice in our world.

Slavery in today's world
For anyone interested in learning how other people are suppressed and how the new modern "slavery" of whole groups of people, this book goes into great detail on their life situations. It is amazing that, in our time, this is not only still going on when slavery was outlawed by ALL nations of the world, but is thriving and providing millions of dollars for those who are involved. A definite must read for those who really want to know what is going on worldwide, and the people who are trying to let the world know what is happening!

An important and disturbing subject
This author has done extensive research on human trafficking and traveled around the world to be a witness to how human beings use each other in horrendous ways. This book is a required text for a class I am taking on human trafficking. It is very well researched and written. It is not easy to read, but it is essential that we realize that slavery still exists and has changed in ways that keep it hidden to many of us in the developed world.

The book has 5 stars for content and information. ...
The book has 5 stars for content and information. It is not possible to "love it" on a topic as horrendous as human slavery. This book represents a global picture of a human tragedy. Be objective when you read it or you may become depressed from the topic.

Brilliant, gripping
A must read. Brilliant, gripping, shocking, heart wrenching. Everyone should read this book. I could write about this all day, how slavery needs to be exposed, how it affects everyone on the planet, but seriously, just read it. Then, do something to help.

Insufferable
Blames everything on capitalism and the west while fully and obliviously acknowledging that the greatest hubs for human trafficking are former (and current) communist countries, the middle east, and Africa. Will make you hate the author despite dealing with a topic everyone should be able to agree on.

Disturbing
Excellent book - accessible writing - but extremely disturbing in content. Some very hard to digest truths about things we all prefer not to know about in our 21st century modern world. Great for sociology or criminology students - or anyone who cares about people from other cultures, and who wants to know more about how we get the "stuff" that we THINK we need....

A must read for all!
In today's world, most of we laypersons busy to think with our technological progress and globalzation at large; and all the "goods" associated with it that made human being superior! Probably, none of us awared about the "bads" of the same and no mainstream media even "dealt" with these! This path breaking work by Kevin Bales was pioneer in this arena, where you could find accounts of those side effects of globlizations, namely modern slavery! We all know slavery existed in past days and did not even know or believe it still exists in almost every corner of the world. If you read this, your belief must would shatter with an enrage upon humanity! You would able to aware how human shackles human and exploits one for economic reasons. I recommend this book to all citizens of India and every nation in this globalized world. Read it... feel it... and do something to stop this heinous crime.....!
