Waiting for Hercules Poirot to come solve my mysteries
This series is fabulous. There’s two other movies, Haunting in Venice and Orient Express, if you watch them in order they’re even better. The costumes are gorgeous, the characters are witty and none of these movies are easy to guess the ending:)

A pastiche of Agatha Christie
First off, I loved the actors in each role, loved the music, and thecinematography is breathtaking. However, I didn't like some of thecharacters and everyone seems at each other's throats or taking shotsat Poirot. I did not like the ending, too dramatic. This seems like Hollywood'sversion of Agatha Christie. I am glad I just rented this.

Perfectly adequate whodoneit
Based on the Agatha Christy novel, the 2022 Death on the Nile film offers a somewhat faithful adaptation with an all-star cast and a classic scenario.A wealthy heiress and her penniless husband are hosting a honeymoon cruise onboard a steamship in Egypt. When she is killed, detective Hercule Poirot discovers that each guest had a motive and must find the killer as the bodies pile up.It's a classic set up, eccentric characters, and exotic setting, an isolated location and mysteries to be solved. The motives and the coincidences that bring the characters together strain credibility of course, but that's part of the classic mystery genre. Some of the changes to make the story more modern could have used some thought. For example one character is in a relationship with an African American woman and while there are comments on her social standing the fact that she's black is not mentioned. I really felt like the filmmakers were deliberately ignoring the racism of the time (their marriage would have been illegal in most of the US) and I found it jarring. In contrast when its learned that two characters are in a same-sex relationship it's done subtly, in keeping with the way people turned a blind eye in that time. The camera work is excellent with some fantastic shots of the river boat they are on. Despite being set in Egypt the film was shot entirely in England. The Ramses Temple and other sites in Egypt look a bit plastic and Disneyesque but that's typical of most CGI work. It's not something I'd really chase down but our family enjoyed it well enough for movie night. there's no graphic violence or sex (one or two references however).

Excellent movie
I am baffled sometimes when I read movie reviews by professional film critics. Do they attend some "Enlightened University" where they learn to see things beyond the grasp of us mere mortals? I mean, to be fair, quite often I have gained some great insights by reading professional film reviews. But almost as often, I have been baffled by the almost smug, "I know more than you" negativity that seems to permeate a lot of the circle of film critics. Death on the Nile (2022) is one such example. While it did receive some positive reviews from film critics, it also received a large measure of negative reviews. meh Whatever. Here is my "unprofessional and unenlightened" personal review: This was an excellent movie. The set design alone was worth the movie. I love atmosphere in a movie. To me, the most important part of a movie is its atmosphere. I was transported back in time to a bygone era where class and privilege were on full display. But more importantly, the scenes of Egypt, along the Nile, the grandeur of the ancient stone carvings, the danger and mystery of the mighty Nile... everything felt very genuine. I felt a sense of nostalgia, but also sadness for what that era also meant for many who bore the burden of the privileged class. The acting was superb. The dialogue was crisp and clean. This felt like a movie where the actors became the person they were portraying in the film. This was a genuinely refreshing change from the two-dimensional pre-packaged drivel that usually comes out of Hollywood. I was ENGROSSED by the film. I savored the scenes. And yes, the ending WAS A SURPRISE. The entire film was a classic and suspenseful whodunit. I had no idea who did what. No clue. Nada. Until the final scenes. And I am a data analyst by trade and a pretty good chess player. I loved this film and I will savor it the next time I watch it. And the next. Enjoy!

Usual stuff
Same as original only this time we have minorities in lead roles which was unheard of back in the time period. But still everyone does a good job. Kenneth B does a great job at reinventing Hercule.
