book was great memories of growing up from the start of early beat em ups and old age consoles such as sness megadrive etc, arcades played alot in my life and its a good read

This tome of retro beat ‘em ups is simply wonderful and even if it’s not your genre of choice, is still worth your time to whisk you back to yesteryear. A fantastic look at some of the best video games of all time.

This is an absolutely stunning collection of photographs and stories about the history of side-scrolling beat-em-up games. It's a very comprehensive guide (spanning over 400 glossy pages!) and beautifully curated. I thought I'd played quite a few games from this genre over the years but there were tons of games featured in here I'd never even heard of! The games featured are from those released between 1980 and 2021 and across multiple platforms. The book has obviously been a labour of love and bitmap books have really outdone themselves yet again with this meaty publication. The games are ordered in chapters chronologically by decade and what I really like is it not only reveals backstories about each of the games but also describes the endings of games which are often quirky are provide unexpected twists. It's glossy and full colour and there are loads of folder out flaps which reveal more information (game maps, character lists etc) which is a nice touch. Looking through this book for a 40 something gamer like me who has also worked in the gaming industry was a moving and nostalgic journey down memory lane. Double dragon, renegade, streets of rage, golden axe, ninja warriors. They're all in here and many more you probably didn't even know existed. I'm so impressed with this book and wish I could give it more stars really :)

Received the book with some dents, no issues there as I know travel might get bumpy. What I could not tolerate was a strange kid of glue in between pages 194 and 195. Even though it could be removed, letters where missing. This clearly is a manufacturing flaw since item came in sealed. Tried solving matter with customer service and since I m from Chile, returning it is extremely tedious. The only thing they could offer me was a £7 refund. Book is amazing, but solution to my problem, really poor.

Fanservice de primeira, não se esquecendo do bom conteúdo, textos e imagens de alta qualidade. Vale muito a pena. Senti falta de alguns títulos, como a série The Great Battle do Sfamicom, mas são detalhes, tiveram outros tantos títulos que eu não conhecia. Recomendo.

Ce livre est un incontournable si vous êtes un amoureux de ce genre un peu délaissé qu'est le beat'em up.La liste des jeux est vraiment impressionnante, et les double pages présentes sublimes.Attention cet ouvrage est entièrement en Anglais.Bref, ce livre est aussi l'occasion de redécouvrir certains chef d'œuvre de l'arcade!

A great source of information for all the Side Scrolling Beat'em Up Games! It really exceeded our expectations (me and my wife's, the Retro Games Couple) when we bought it for a review. Ended up reading it from start to finish. A great insight, too much there were no interviews like in their other books.

Bitmap Books are usually beautiful, super heavy, and perfectly manufactured. If you buy from them directly, they ship in very sturdy packaging, protecting the corners of the book. Amazon does NOT cover the corners of the book, and since this is a very heavy book in a quite thin carton envelope, the corners got damaged. Return to sender, learned my lesson, will order with Bitmap Books directly.
