you will need to harden the surface yourself like I had to
So this anvil is sort of a conundrum. It says it's forged steel but it's really hard to tell. The face is only "hardened" and barely at that, in the center of the face directly above the body of the anvil. If you are looking for a serious anvil, you will need to harden the surface yourself like I had to. I struck the anvil in inconspicuous areas to test the hardness and it is very soft. I layed the anvil in my forge face down for about 45 minutes until it got enough to be hardened then I quench the face, moving vigorously until it was completely cooled. After that I put it in the oven at 500° for an hour then let air cool outside. Took about 5 solid hours to cool down. The face was then truly hardened. Had a decent ring to it after that and no dinging.

Item is cast iron not steel, worth one star. However, VKRP is worth 5 stars.
If this was forged steel as LISTED, it wont leave dents from light hammer strikes. This thing dents and shows strikes easily. There is no way its forged steel, its too damn soft. This SHOULD be one star, but the VKRP has outstanding customer service after my initial purchase was lost in the mail so Ill give it three.EDIT: First anvil lost in the mail, replacement sent within one day of talking to seller. Also after telling the company about the misleading product, they were extremely professional and expedient in rectifying the situation

It work good for me
I order it cause I had some metal to straighten out. It work good for me. The shiny surface got dinged - I thought it would of been harder so it can take the pounding.

Decent little anvil
Bit smaller than I expected. But has a good ring. Had some sticky stuff on the top face and the black paint on the horn is not needed, it flakes off onto pieces

It's not steel.
I had my doubts about whether or not this was steel when I got it, and made the mistake of not reading the comments before making my purchase. Despite the title and description of the product stating it's forged, tempered, hardened steel, it dents with hammer hits that couldn't even drive a nail.

Spend extra money and buy a good anvil.
Very disappointed, but what should I expect for an anvil at this price. Very soft material will need to be hardened before it is even used. Wouldn't recommend it.
