I obtained all of the books in the series Treatments that Work authored by Dr. Barlow and colleagues. As a psychologist working at a Counseling Center that adheres to a brief model of counseling, I have found these resources to be extremely helpful. The structure of these books in both the therapist guide and the patient's manual are excellent resources for counselors and psychologists working at counseling centers. I typically see students with anxiety disorders and use the patient's manuals, for example, for students to read on the nature of anxiety. The logs included in the manuals are very user friendly, practical, and helpful to students. The language is definitely understandable for this population. The Panic Control Therapy based on Dr. Barlow's approach has been proven over and over with positive outcomes in students who accessed our services on the verge of leaving school because their anxiety symptoms were negatively affecting their ability to function. I have used these evidence-based approaches quite successfully and I highly recommend that counseling centers have these resources in their libraries as reference and essential components of their treatment approach for anxiety in student populations. More specifically, if a semester typically consists of fifteen weeks, his manuals are structured to be followed for approximately 13 to 17 weeks. I have closely structured the counseling for anxiety disorders following his suggestions and the beginning of treatment, duration, and termination flow has consistently worked. Similarly, the student satisfaction surveys have consistently favored this approach. Recently, Dr. Barlow and his colleagues put out a video that illustrates some of the main concepts on anxiety treatment and I have successfully used this multimedia material with counseling center trainees. I recommend obtaining both, the books and the video.

helpful work book for folks who need help with anxiety and panic disorder: highly recommended by counselors and anxious people
I bought this work book for a friend who's counselor recommended it for his Food Phobia. He kept choking on food and the thought of dying from choking on food made him anxious. He actually had a yeast infection in his throat (as we learned months later, after he nearly starved to death). If you genuinely have anxiety or panic disorder, it's highly recommended. If you need treatment for a yeast infection in the throat- it doesn't work so great for that problem.Another friend who truly does have an anxiety disorder looked at this work book and stated it had some helpful ideas for her.The counselor recommends this book often, so if you don't want to talk to someone or pay for those visits, this work book might be an option to pursue to see if it works for you. If you do see a counselor, this work book might be a helpful addition.

This book released me from the prison of my mind.
If you have an anxiety disorder, stop reading now and buy this book. Applying the easy to use steps the book suggests have been better than any med prescribed!!! If you spend 1/10th of the time using the book as you do worrying about the future, you will be amazed at the results.

Ok workbook
My therapist recommended this book to me-Its not a bad book, but it just did not work for me. I read all the reviews and took what people had to say into great consideration before buying. However, I did all the homework and even brought it to my therapist, I just did not get anything from them. For instance, you write out your level of anxiety and triggers each day and what caused them. I did that but for some reason it gave me more anxiety. Maybe because I was going through so much in my life at the time, and seeing how much anxiety I had made it worse. Every person is different, so what works for one individual might not work for someone else. Plus I would rather a cheaper book. I think it was over priced and I will end up giving this book away. I would recommend, "When Panic Attacks" by MD David Burns. It has many ideas about panic attacks and anxiety and I have referred back to the book several times. Overall, I just don't have any use for this book.

Mastering Anxiety- Great Choice!
I have struggled with anxiety and panic issues for a long time now, and nothing helps me feel more in control about my panic than this book. It covers every topic that someone struggling with anxiety worrys about, and reassures you that its all going to be okay and that you are in control of your panic. I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about managing their anxiety and panic, because it does require a decent amount of effort. However, it definitely pays off in the end. The worksheets and overall interactive nature of this book is extremely helpful in that the book does more than just lecture you about your panic. It allows you to be an active participant in your effort to manage (and eventually overcome) panic and anxiety. This is the book for you if you are ready to change your life!

Best of the bunch
This is the best book on the topic that I have read, and I've read many. Clear, very thorough, and practical. The therapist's guide provides the most detailed and yet easy to read explanations of such topics as hyperventilation, hypoglycemia, the adrenalin response and many other topics and how they contribute to anxiety and panic; and equally important, how to correct their effects. For therapists like me, the therapist's guide provides an excellent roadmap to helping patients. This companion worksbook designed for patients provides easy to use forms that can be copied from the book or from a download site on the web they can be printed. I highly recommend this book and Barlow's other books, both the therapist's guide and the workbook for patients. While many patients may be able to use the workbook alone to overcome their condition, more complicated situations, or for people who need the extra structure of counseling sessions; either way the workbook is a valuable resource.

A Great Tool for CBT Therapists and a Usefull 'Self-Help' workbook
I often use the 'Treatment That Works' workbooks with clients in our CBT practice. I find that they are really useful in helping the client to focus on the work that they need to do in-between sesions. It is also very useful for those clients who prefer to engage in therapy 'on-line' or by telephone rather than face-to-face.If you (the client) commit to putting the time in to working through each chapter, it can really help you to address and overcome the issues of anxiety / panic that you are currently experiencing. As with many of the series of workbooks, this particular workbook on ANXIETY & PANIC can be used as a 'Self-Help' workbook. If you feel that you may not need the support of a CBT therapist, I would suggest that this is one of the better workbooks on the market. The author is very credible and highly respected in the field of CBT. You could always consult with a CBT therapist if you feel that you need more than the workbook offers. If so, ask if they have heard f the workbook and whether they will be prepared to use it as part of your therapy sessions. This could lead to you needing less sessions with the therapist and thereby save you money!

A great self help book
Really interesting book and a great self learning CBT course. Did repeat itself on a couple of occasions but it was easy to understand and made a lot of self. It may seem expensive but you have a 6 + week programme in there to follow so a lot cheaper than a therapist

No pore panic attacks. Thank you!
I bough this book in 2009 when I was going through some serious anxiety. I was at the point where I was having difficulty going out of the house because I was afraid I would have a panic attack in public. Going through the workbook really helped me a lot. I learned to practically disassemble my panic attacks which allowed me to use the energy in a healthy way. I highly recommend this workbook to anybody suffering from anxiety and panic attacks.
