Exceptional book on leadership; A must read!
The book, "Listen Up, Leader!" by David Cottrell is a short, but effective primer aimed at those currently in a leadership position as well as those aspiring to be a leader in the workplace. Written from the perspective of an employee in a non-managerial position, this book offers a terrific vantage point of how employees think and react to their manager's supervisory abilities. Those managerial skills, be it good or bad, positive or negative, culminate in an over-arching lesson in how an effective leader can both inspire and gain the trust of the people they lead.Oftentimes, the simplest things in life are the ones hardest to master. Anyone can lead, but few can do it effectively. Leaders, as Mr. Cottrell points out, are not born nor the skills of an effective leader be inherited. Only through trial and error and mastering a defined set of skills can you become a leader. This book offers straight answers to tough questions; those in leadership positions who read this book will no doubt recognize areas that they must improve in and the book offers solid, frank solutions on how to correct and fulfill their calling as an effective leader.I found this book to be both inspiring and highly influential. While the book does not cover anything "new" per se, it simply states the obvious, succinctly offering a common sense approach to the hardest job in the workplace. Many of the lessons taught in this book are grounds for serious reflection, not just on the abilities of what makes an effective leader, but that of the culture of the workplace itself. For example, Mr. Cottrell states in the book that, "If you don't show us you care, we conclude that you don't. Then we reciprocate... we stop caring, too".While a quick read, the book represents a solid effort by Mr. Cottrell in that he gets right to the point and cuts out the fluff commonly found in other leadership publications. I thoroughly enjoyed his brevity and powerful ability to cut to the chase, uncovering information the way a miner pans for gold; every nugget a valuable opportunity to improve and add to one's own skill set, fleshing out their leadership toolbox and becoming a true asset to their organization and those they lead.In short, I feel that this book represents a concise guide toward positive leadership that would benefit leaders at all levels as well as those aspiring to attain a leadership position. As Mr. Cottrell is quoted as saying in his book, "Leadership must be earned... and by working with others to achieve common goals". While no book will ever replace learning leadership skills the hard way, Listen Up, Leader! is a terrific way to set personal leadership goals and improve upon skills already learned.

Simple ideas to solve complex programs
Throughout leadership we face tasks and challenges both new and old, and in the course of growing both our teams and ourselves we can often lose focus on what truly matters. This book helps realign that focus from the point of view that truly matters.

Good and practical
I bought this book for a college course. But it turned out to be applicable to marriage and ministry. Not rocket science but common sense tips for anyone who leads an organization or family. I bought it used but it was in better condition than expected.

Wow!!
Who would've thought that there would be such a book to pinpoint exactly what and how I am feeling. I wonder if directors and/or leaders took the time to read this how much of a change would happen in the work environment. How much more would they motivate their staff/employees and realize that without their staff/employees they're company is nothing.
