The Modern Caravan: Stories of Love, Beauty, and Adventure on the Open

This book inspired me to finish our airstream tiny house
I’ll admit it, I was hesitant to buy this book. I’ve consumed so much content on tiny homes, airstreams, and van life that if I had just worked those hours instead of watching videos and scrolling social media I’ll bet I could have just bought an airstream or sprinter van that was already finished! I decided to pull the trigger though as I was struggling to muster up enough motivation to finish my Covid project- our ‘72 airstream “tiny house”. (Yes- Covid like I started this three years ago) and was hungry for another type of media. This book tells stories of folks who come from all different walks of life. Reading a book- like actually holding it and feeling its pages is so different than looking at or reading about it on a screen. It seems more real to me somehow. All the stories and photos of people and their incredible and unique “caravans” took me somewhere I haven’t been in a long time. This book really brought the stories to life and the ideology and philosophy that the author and her subjects share through gave me reassurance of my own life views and helped me in sort of a therapeutic way to know that way I believe is okay and the way I see things might be different than others but we all see things differently and that makes us who we are. I’ve read this book countless times since purchasing it and each time I see something that inspires me and keeps me going toward the finish line on my project. It’s a labor of love for sure, and as it comes to an end it’s very bitter sweet and I can start to get a taste of what it’s going to feel like what it’s done and oh so worth it. If you’re on the fence about ordering this book I’d say go for it. If you’re on the fence about living your dream whatever it might look like I say go for it. Embracing discomfort every day as I move forward on this project has brought something into my life that makes it all worth while. Here are some pictures of the project. I thought as I finished it up that I ought to leave a review thanking the author for taking her time to make this book and a huge thank you to everyone who took part of it sharing their stories with the rest of us dreamers. If you’d like to see the completed airstream look for “housing sucks” on you tube and it’ll be there, a final video once I’m done.

Inspirational!
The Modern Caravan captured the spirit of living in a small space or on the road. It certainly made me want to renovate an Airstrean again!

Let the day dreams begin!
I love the idea of camping, and living so close to nature, but right now, my reality is just looking at pictures of other people doing that.… And this book was perfect for just that.
