Very informational
A great book but words are quite small and the book itself is on the smaller side. Would recommend to anyone wanting to dig deeper into history.

Great. Drawn into the characters from the 3rd paragraph.
A meta-fiction for rebellion against the traditional Chinese family structure set during the tumultuous early nineteenth-century. This is a story with love, hope, sorrow and loss (not necessarily in that order)! The author's skill shines as your drawn into a clearly described arena and wrapped up in the characters. Highly enjoyable for any 20 something + with an interest in China, lives during rebellion, or coming into adulthood stories. Rated PG-13 for tough themes but it's not graphic. I was assigned to read it for college and kept forgetting I was supposed to be writing a review!

Decent Book
The book was interesting. As with any book, the first few chapters are bit slow, but the story definitely develops after that point. This book does not have much action or suspense; it is very much character driven. The reader does connect with the characters themselves, and the ending does payoff on this investment. The plot was slow at times when it did not need to be, but it was decent book overall.

Interesting
Well on some levels it's hard to read because the actual writing is not much above a Danielle Steele level. On the other hand, it's a fascinating view of pre-revolution China and the ancient system that caused such great upheavals in the decades after the book takes place. Well worth a read for historical reasons. It's a very easy read.

Interesting...
I had to get this book for my modern lit class. I must say, however, that the teacher was right when she said we'd find it interesting as a stand-alone book! I'm only through the first 100 pages, but it's a very good read, especially for a book written in the 1930's. It could have easily been written by someone from this decade! I can't wait to read the rest.

Interesting
A great look into the new cultural movement experienced in China in the early 20th century. Any fan of Chines history will enjoy. Pa Chin is regarded as one of China's most beloved and prolific writers.

A good read and insight in to China in the first half of the 1900's and the culture, politics and difficulties.

Beautiful
Accessible and human novel, I'm grateful for the honesty of so many of its charming characters (who admit their shortcomings and contradictions and suffer because of this conscience), for its faith and warmth. Valuable, and not only for the social context in which the story is set.
