Dead Man's Walk

A classic of the American West in the 1800's.
This novel by Larry McMurtry depicting the Texan military expedition from Austin to Santa Fe, with disastrous consequences to the participants, is one that could be read by anyone who loves a well told story that is both descriptive of the times and has characters that will make you wonder how people survived in those days, as well as making us think what easy lives we lead today but lacking, in most cases, the wonderful experiences these pioneers experienced figuratively but not practically.I could hardly put the book down and felt all the hardships and moments of wonderment the characters went through, with the writing capturing brilliantly the harshness and beauty of the countryside and life in general. It is a wonderful read, even for those not interested in the American West and after reading the book, i thoroughly recommend the film of the same title that faithfully brings the book to life on the screen.

Would I have read Lonesome Dove if I'd read this first?
Would I have read Lonesome Dove if I'd read this first? Probably not, and I would therefore have missed one of the outstanding novels of the 20th Century (I've a 5* review on Amazon). Lonesome Dove this is not, still a good read, but nowhere near the standard of LD. If you do read this first (as it's also know as Lonesome dove 1), then be prepared for quite a repetitive story, well told, but ultimately unfulfilling. Do not, however let this put you off LD.

A good lock down read
Started off really well - lots of tension. A good read before you start on Lonesome Dove which is top drawer. The end of Dead Man's walk got a little bit silly and in many ways self indulgent - throwing the kitchen sink at the story line - not a good ending.

Absorbing read
I read Lonesome dove years ago and have only just got around to reading the prequles and sequel. Commanche Moon retains all that is good about lonesome dove, it's so absorbing time just flies when you read it. It's a truly epic story and an essential read for any western fans.
