Q: My art work is 20" X 36" X 2" Would this fit in this bag or will it be to tight?

I believe it would be too tight on the long dimension because it is seen flat with no gusset.

Q: The description says this bag is 24 x 36; in the questions the dimensions are given as 31 x 23. Which is correct?

We sell 4 different sizes of black portfolio on Amazon at present: 23'' x 31'' , 24'' x 36'', 32'' x 42'' and 36'' x 48''. The size on the description is the outer of this item and corresponds to the title.

Q: 22x28 posterboards will fit into the the 24x36 size, correct? I know it should but don't know how much padding there is inside.

There isn’t any padding inside. Your poster board should be just fine

Q: About how many 16x20 painting canvases would fit in this tote?

Depends on the piece and how they are wrapped. 4-6.
