The Kovak Box

Even though "The Kovac Box" is 13 years old at this point in time, it still feels contemporaneous, a sign of a good film. There is a multi-layered plot which, while not entirely novel in its story-within-a-story, life-imitating-art premise, still manages to tell its tale in an intriguing, methodical way. The script is well-written, the cinematography superb, but the slow pace of some parts of film had to be overcome by the sheer talent of Timothy Hutton, Lucia Jimenez and David Kelly. In addition to the multi-layered storyline, the film also has a many layered message: absolute power corrupts absolutely; free will may be an illusion; there is a difference between doing things right and doing the right thing, and the government, any government, can't be trusted. Other than the few slow parts, "The Kovak Box" is a very good film and, at least for me, had me thinking long after I watched it.

Timothy Hutton and his co-star Lucía Jiménez really take the watcher on a roller coaster ride.Warning: During this movie a score from the original 'Gloomy Sunday' is actually played and it is off and on throughout the film. I think this warning should have been posted before watching the film itself especially with the history regarding this song.The film does drag a bit in some areas. It doesn't really tie up loose ends. And I'm still wondering what happened to some of the characters. One of them it's not sure if they are dead or not by the end of the film. It's not one that I would watch again. Although the plot line starts out interesting it drops off with lots of unanwered questions about half way through.

Classic thriller, that started very well, even scary, but ended up with a simple story of a stereotypical villain like you could expect to see in a comic book. Timothy Hutton was good. I mostly finished watching because of him. Girl character was kind of annoying because of her neurotic behavior and heavy accent. A lot of loose ends in the end. Maybe the movie is too short for a story it was trying to tell. In the last fifteen minutes, it looked like movie makers started to rush up to finish the story.

Definitely different from the 3 star movies in Prime. Worth watching. You can try to predict what would happen next and you would end up in the twist and turns. 2007 film that fits right into the 2020 movies. Timothy Hutton made this film very well done. Nice film locations as well. Is that in Spain ? Somewhere in the Mediterranean ... Not bad.

This isn't science fiction, it's a mystery thriller, which is fine. The film creates some good tension and has great cinematography, decent acting and good production values. At first the mystery is intriguing, at first, it then becomes a beat to death plot point I no longer cared to reveal since I was weary of it. I was letdown by the anticlimactic non-ending after the big buildup but this is worth watching as long as it remains included in Prime Video with no rental fee.

Very interesting premise, but probably would work better in writing. This script is confusing & hard to follow, even with the loads of exposition. I'm not sorry I watched this movie, but it's not memorable.

So, there's an interesting idea somewhere in here but the script is SO BAD that the idea is lost. I don't know how Hutton managed to generally dignify his scenes with his performance but he did, remarkable given the terrible dialog and editing. The only way this happens is that the script got caught in a struggle and was finished by a very tired committee of drunks. Other than Hutton the cast is second and third rate (sorry guys but I calls 'em as I sees 'em).

Just so-so. A little predictable. After about 45 minutes I found myself getting up and doing things, just listening and only watched the end.

Bitte Anschnallen, denn wir befinden uns mit der Hauptfigur, einem Autor, auf dem Landeanflug zur Ferieninsel Mallorca. Und was ein richtiger Schriftsteller ist, sieht er überall Geschichten und Merkwürdigkeiten, die sich in seinem Kopf zu abenteuerlichen Abhandlungen verbinden. Doch was geschieht mit einem solchen Menschen, wenn die Begebenheiten immer merkwürdiger werden und sich das ganze in einer ansonsten malerischen Landschaft abspielt? Geschieht das alles wirklich oder nur im Labyrinth seiner Gehirnwindungen?Der Film schafft ein schönes Spiel mit unseren Erwartungen, die wir bereits aus anderen Filmen dieses Genres gesammelt haben und weiß immer wieder zu überraschen. Auch wenn die Auflösung und das Ende vielleicht nicht so kompliziert ist, wie wir es erwarteten haben; der Film ist eine kleine Perle im sonstigen Thriller-Allerlei.Und wie im Leben erwacht man manchmal nicht aus einem Albtraum, sondern muß darin weiterleben.

Le pitch de départ était excellent, un signal sous forme d'une musique est envoyé à diverses personnes. Dès que ce signal est perçu, ces personnes se suicident. Comment?, pourquoi?, voilà bien tout le sel de ce pitch prometteur. Passée la première demi heure intriguante, le film s'enlise malheureusement un peu et l'intérêt s'estompe un poil. La faute sans doute à une mise en scène trop plate, peu graphique, sans véritable surprise et à une certaine lenteur de narration. Le jeu de l'acteur principal n'est en outre pas des plus convaincant (pas plus que son doublage VF d'ailleurs). Toutefois le scénario tient la route sur la longueur et le tout reste assez cohérent si ce n'est un autre bémol tout de même : les motifs qui poussent l'obscure personnage à organiser machiavéliquement ces étonnants assassinats paraissent bien futiles eu égard aux moyens déployés. Tout ça pour ça ! A t-on envie de crier en fin de mètrage. Et tout machiavélique qu'il est, son plan comportant trop d'aléas avait toute de même de grandes chances de tomber à l'eau. Sur la même trame, une organisation à plus grande échelle suivant un mobile plus réaliste ou même carrément fictionnel aurait été plus crédible. Le tout se laisse cependant suivre sans déplaisir mais on reste un peu frustré de ne pas avoir assisté à quelque chose de plus palpitant, à une mise en scène plus osée avec cette idée de base intéressante.
