The purpose of this field manual is to provide a standardized source document for Army-wide reference on map reading and land navigation. This manual applies to every soldier in the Army regardless of service branch, MOS, or rank. This manual also contains both doctrine and training guidance on these subjects. Part One addresses map reading and Part Two, land navigation. The appendixes include a list of exportable training materials, a matrix of land navigation tasks, an introduction to orienteering, and a discussion of several devices that can assist the soldier in land navigation. Review: Veterans Choice for map reading and Land Navigation. - I am a veteran tanker, map reading and land navigation is a given skill to be a tank commander and this is the book I trained on. It is strictly a no-nonsense map reading manual used by the military, oh it has changed a bit since I first read it, but not that much. This is a skill to be used in the field with a map, compass and protractor. It is comprehensive and has everything explained in terms that any NCO grunt can understand. Officers sometimes have problems reading it. Review: Very informative - Very informative

THE REAL ARMY FIELD MANUAL
Just like the one from the Army. Great manual to teach anyone land navigation with a map and compass. Get the protractor and a Silva compass that has the ability to set declination, and you can be out in the woods in less than a day (if you apply yourself). Start out with easy to find terrain features, natural or man made, i.e. a tower, etc. Great book to teach Scouts, etc. Spent 22 years in the Army, and this is the foundation to learn and navigate in any terrain. Another good investment would be the Ranger pace count beads, look for my review on them.

Very useful!
Lots of useful information. Highlighted pages i will need to reference back to. Hard to understand a bit but this was obviously intended for a classroom setting. Everything you need to know about map reading and general navigation.

You won't be sorry, buy this book
Great book. I am now a civilian for many years and like so many other civilians I just use Rand McNally road maps to get from place to place. I am severely short of remembering how to use the map tools available so this book is a number one winner for me. Extremely detailed and well laid out for self instructions. I am very pleased with this purchase. There are some who claim that you can find this same book on the web in PDF. They are correct and I did as well, but you have to be nuts to try and print out all these pages even with a double sided printer. You simply can't beat mass production especially when the publisher buys ink by the 55 gallon drum and you buy it by expensive cartridges. Now since you most likely don't have military maps I have found and downloaded my area and other closely related area city maps with the utilities, waterways, traffic, population, etc.. just in case of internal war if gun grabber, traitor Clinton should win. Maybe you should too. I do keep a copy on my computer anyway just in case I need a copy desperately and the paper one gets stolen, lost or damaged. I can always to go my saved places and open up a copy. And don't forget to buy your Mountain House survival food. (...) You are the resistance

the real thing !
Just as we used and trained on in the Army . I would like to see a coated version for durability for instructional uses. Expect to have a good experience with my Grand kids , a great confidence builder.

Good reference
Batteries fail and electronics break. This is a good reference for working with a map and compass.

Powerful Reading Glasses Needed.
This edition of "Map Reading and Land Navigation" is an update of earlier editions. The book is printed in Britain by Amazon . The page margins are wide, but the font size is tiny, so tiny that one will need very strong reading glasses to read it, or a very large, powerful magnifying glass. Like earlier editions of this manual, it is the distillation of the experiences the US Army and US Marine Corps in military actions in much of the world since WW2. The design of their protractors enables accurate plotting of positions on their maps, for example; and more secondary aids to navigation are now in use. This book provides a solid base on which to build one's knowledge of map reading (a table top process) and land navigation (boots on the ground). Good value for money - pity about the print size.
