A brilliant telling of an important part of Scottish history
Such an entertaining and educational read. Obviously, given the timescale, artistic licence has filled in some gaps, but it is overall a very good telling. It actually has the scope to have been an epic series of books as it has many battles and political intrigues happening over many years. An excellent book.

Kenneth. By Nigel Tranter
Another good read by Nigel Tranter and a history lesson too. It was interesting to read about the father and creator of Scotland. Obviously little is known about Kenneth but Mr.Tranter has filled in the gaps beautifully bringing the man and his family alive. The way he describes the Scotish landscape you could almost be there.

GREAT history for the normal person
Don't know much about Scottish history and this is a great way to learn it.Easy to read but with lots of facts as well, personalities and some sense of the people, the era, landscape and lifestyle. GoogleMap Scotland to see where he travels.Recommend *****R

Excellent
Nigel Granted is a master at putting flesh onto the bones of history, even where the bones are a bit sketchy! Makes you wish Scotland could have had more kings like Kenneth.

Celtic History Masterpiece
Great story on a long forgotten Celtic Warrior. The geographical references were insightful to the political dynamics of the era. I enjoyed the author's ability to provide a historical backdrop to both major and minor events within the story. The scenery descriptions were very detailed, which allowed me to envision the landscape's of Scotland. Some of the dialing may have dragged on, but I was able to get through it little difficulty. The description of Viking war attire was a slightly off. Overall I recommend this book for those interested in Celtic history, the birth of Scotland and the Viking period in general.
