Creature Features: The Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Movie Guide

This is a gold mine of information about horror and fantasy movies, which casts a wide net, even hauling in James Bond flicks. It's amusingly written, although some may think it's not serious enough, most fans of these genres will enjoy it. It only goes up to about the year 2000, which still covers a lot of movies I've never seen. The author pays a lot of attention to the bust size and nudity of actresses, information you may find useful or insulting, I don't know. He also clearly is a believer in UFOs, alien encounters, ghosts, and other stuff I consider sheer BS. But for me the volume and detail of this information makes the book one I have to have by the TV at all times. My copy is already heavily marked up, that's how much I use it. If an updated edition came out, I'd buy it today.

A very great book for the genre! Back in the early 80,s Mr Stanley was one the first to put out a video guide for tapes ( vhs & beta !!).Along with Michael Weldon phycotroniic movie guide , it was the " go to " book's for accurate film info..

Product arrived in good condition as promised by the seller. After looking through this book I can see many old Science fiction and Horror movies that I had actually forgotten about. I feel that this book was well worth the money as it is a thick book with all of the Science Fiction andHorror movies that are out through the end of 1996! Excellent book with excellent reviews on movies!

This book is the ultimate guide to all movies horror and sci-fi, with everything in between. It serves as a constant guide to all the classic movies that are often overlooked by mainstream books. As a horror and sci-fi fan, especially of 80's and 90's movies, the Creature Features guide is a go-to reference book that I keep close by at all times. Awesome!

I love the 50's Sci-Fi movies and when I want to totally unwind, you can't beat the trashy, cheesy horror and sci-fi z-movies in this volume. This guide, updated to 2000, is my chair side companion to guide me through this maze of movies. The reviews are fun, informative, and complete--from the obscure to the well known! It is worth every cent!

I have 2 earlier Creature Features/Stanley editions and purchased this one to get the more recent films. Less illustrations, more titles/text. I went for a used copy $7, in excellent shape.

1950年代の終わり頃から、米国では「モンスター・カルチャー」とも呼ばれる、怪奇映画の一大ブームが巻き起こり、テレビでは「ショック・シアター」という番組が古い怪奇映画を毎週のように流し、編集者のフォレスト・Ｊ・アッカーマンは｢フェイマス・モンスターズ・オブ・フィルムランド」という専門誌を創刊した。怪奇映画の製作本数も年々増え続け、お茶の間のブラウン管からは怪物たちが所狭しと溢れ出していた…。そんな状況の中、カリフォルニア州、サンフランシスコ・ベイ・エリアのイースト・ベイと呼ばれる地域の中核都市にあたるオークランドでＳＦ怪奇幻想映画ばかりを専門に流す「CreatureFeatures」(KTVU-2)というテレビ・プログラムがスタートした。番組では毎回、冒頭にホストが出て映画解説の前口上を述べるという、おなじみの形式がとられているが、初代ホストを務めたボブ・ウィルキンズは眼鏡にスーツ姿というインテリスタイルで、当時、雨後の筍の如くあったこの種の番組に登場した怪奇メイクの悪趣味なホスト、ホステス達とは一線を画していた。また、当時は番組のスローガンとして｢怪奇映画を見よう、アメリカ強くあれ」と書かれたボードも登場し、核の恐怖におののく冷戦下の時代を感じさせた。この番組は毎週、金曜日夜から土曜日にかけて、二時間程度放送された模様で、1980年代まで続いた人気長寿番組だった。この「CreatureFeatures」と題する本は、番組二代目ホストのジョン・スタンリーがまとめた、番組と連携したガイドブックで、1919年の「カリガリ博士」あたりから始まって1996年のエディー・マーフィー主演「ナッティー・プロフェッサー」あたりまで、千本のレヴューが掲載されている。作品はアルファベット順に並べられており、五つ星評価で採点されている。Boulevard Books刊。　　　1997年発行。582頁　図版なし。縦17.5センチ　横10.5センチ(外国の典型的なペイパーパックのサイズ、日本の新書判サイズ)著者のジョン・スタンリーは、1979年から1984年まで６年間ホストを務め、このガイドブックは恐らく番組終了後から書き始められたと思われる。版を重ねに重ねて、これが今のところ５冊目の決定版であるが、更なる改訂を求める声が多い。日本では全くなじみのない人物であるが、米国では番組ともども余程人気のある人物らしく、自伝出版に際しては、あのファンタジー作家の巨匠レイ・ブラッドベリが「みんなこの本を読むべきだ!!みんな!!」と手放しの推薦文を物するほどである。｢血糊したたる経歴」という序文に続いて、ビデオ、レーザーディスク販売会社の連絡先が50社以上も書き出されている。今や時代はDVD、ブルーレイであるが、当時これらのリストは重宝したものであろうと思われる。千本の作品が掲載されているとはいえ、完璧無比のリスト、ガイドブックの作製は土台無理があり、落ちこぼれている作品もやはりある。｢フリークス」をリメイクした「SheFreak」とか、ウィリアム・キャッスルの「Zotz!」とか、知ってか知らずか、どうでもいいような小粒の作品は載っていない。また我が日本からは東宝のゴジラシリーズ、｢怪談」、大映のガメラ、大魔神のシリーズ等が採用されている。米国以外の伊太利、仏蘭西映画の紹介では、米国題だけで原題が明記されていない。その点ではまさに米国人による米国人のための米国人のガイドブックである。ただし、複数に及ぶ劇場公開時別題やテレビ放映時の別題、ビデオ販売時の変更題等は、英語だが丁寧に記載されている。完璧無比のガイドブックではないが、虎の穴に住んでいるような海千山千の映画狂でない限り、十分役に立つのではないか。何しろ軽いペーパーバックである。鞄の友に良し、ポケット携帯上等。千本ある。発見する楽しみも、もちろん、ある。

As a fan of horror movies I just had to buy this book to buy this book to see if it lived up the ratings, the front cover blurb calls the author the Leonard Maltin of horror, that is a lot to love up to as Maltin's reference books are invaluable  Leonard Maltin's 2015 Movie Guide: The Modern Era (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide) I'm not sure how many films are included here, although the fourth edition had 5614 titles, there are no illustrations at all, it's just a series of often light hearted reviews covering the dawn of the horror genre up to 1999. I love the older movies that relied more on tension than in yer face gore effects and will be marking each of the films I see off as I go along, I'd previously bought and just watched this box set  Abbott And Costello: Meet The Killer/Jekyll And Hyde [DVD ] which was a good start.I've probably already seen most of the films here but there must be many I've missed so I can almost use it as a shopping list, it is not an exhaustive list as it does not contain one of my favourite low budget monster movies  Zaat [Blu-ray] [1971] [US Import ] but it's a great starting point for fans of classic horror, fantasy and science-fiction. If you remember wandering around a small neighborhood video store checking out the boxes for "Night of the Comet" and "Return of the Living Dead"? If you ever wanted to look up an obscure Hammer film playing later on TV or look up the films on some 20 film DVD pack here on Amazon, this is the reference book for you.These days books like this have been rendered fairly obsolete thanks to the internet, but this is still a useful, and entertaining book to own.I had an earlier, I guess late 80s copy I replaced with this update when my original started falling apart from over use. All the older reviews remain and are pretty accurate in rating the quality of these films, and it's also fun and informative to read. Sadly, the newer films (into the 90s) chart the dying off of the b-movie and the emergence of it's replacement, the straight to video/shot on video time filler, and those reviews become a bit less honest in terms of quality and entertainment value, I guess to keep the enthusiasm for genres alive.
