A must read for all Indians.
This book provides a bird's eye view to the v events culminating in the storming of the Golden Temple. Shekhar Gupta's account of the Indian Army's heroic effort in which they sacrificed their lives but didn't desecrate the holy temple is heart warming.

Wonderful book but it ends at bluestar.. It should have ended where the militancy ended in punjab..

For somebody who wants to understand the politics of punjab
The reviews seem to be quite accurate and the white paper also seems matter of fact . I can't fathom why the congress was then blamed for brindhanwale when it clearly looks like he was a terrorist in the guise of a sant

While India has a horrible human rights record
This book is written and edited by people who played a role against the Sikh militants in Punjab. Quite analogous to a book written about The Holocaust by Hitler. If you are looking for objectivity then this book is NOT the book to read. I was a bit astonished as to most of the positive reviews were left by non-Sikhs who had no direct link to the politics and ideals of the 1980s Punjab, where the common Sikh young man was regularly picked-up and tortured in police stations all over Punjab and New Delhi. As a young Sikh boy who grew up in that era in Punjab, I personally knew many families where a son or a brother was tortured and killed by police in the name of 'terrorism'. The gov't fully backed the police fully and NOT a single police officer was ever brought to justice. KPS Gill was given full impunity and never held accountable for a single murder of over 250,000 young Sikh men and women including that of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. While India has a horrible human rights record, the west continues to give India a pass as it is a great business partner and of course because India is the 'world's largest democracy'.Thousands of Sikh families still wait for justice and compensation for the 3-day Sikh genocide in 1984 when prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated. Gandhi's son Rajiv won the election by a sympathy vote. Rajiv and the Congress party organized the genocide and thousands of Sikhs were murdered in cold blood as the police looked on and perpetrators looted Sikh houses. All of the above I wrote is from personal experience and from memories of my own two eyes. That is the truth that you will not find in this one-sided book.
