Be aware - two USB ports will probably be needed
I have used different portable/external DVD drives over the years and was interested to see how this one from another company would measure up to those.Since all of my other drives were simple plug-and play drives (and they immediately worked), I didn’t read the short instructions. I plugged the drive’s short USB cable into one of my desktop computer's ports, inserted a DVD, and then waited for the DVD to show up on the computer’s screen/desktop - it never did. The same thing happened when I tried to plug it into my second computer’s ports.I was afraid that the drive was busted. But before trying to return it, I decided to read the instructions. Maybe there was something different about this drive. That’s when I came across the part where it said: “…It is better to use the external power adapter to increase the power if your devices don’t have enough power to support the external drive.” WHAT??? None of my other drives need additional power to work! But I went ahead and plugged the (included) USB A to USB mini cable into the back of the drive and then into one of the computer’s USB ports. With the added power, the drive/DVD finally showed up on the desktop. Now that it was working, I played some movies - they looked just fine. I next copied a video dvd (that I had previously made - I make my own video content). The resulting video looked fine too.Pros:• The weight seems the same as my other drives which is good. I don’t like equipment that is so light you wonder how flimsy it is or how long it will last.• I like the front eject button (so it is easy to eject a disk if your computer’s digital eject option doesn’t work).• I like that the data cable has both a USB A and a USB C end. This way you don’t have to purchase an adapter if your computer doesn’t have the needed port.Cons:• The included USB data cable is too short. Oh it is OK if you are plugging it into a laptop (that it can sit right next to), but not if you want to plug into a tall desktop computer. Though the instructions advise not to use an USB extension cord, I went ahead and used one. Fortunately it worked.• None of my other portable burners needed extra power to work. I am limited to only a few USB ports on the computer that I want to plug it in to, so having to lose one to a power cable does not sit well with me.Final thoughts:I haven’t had the drive long enough to know its longevity, so I can’t remark on that. But so far I think it is a nice burner IF you have an extra USB port for the power cord (that you will probably need).

Relive Memories of Burning CDs
Recently I purchased a new PC tower for a good price, but the rising trend with laptops and towers is they are no longer coming with built in disc drives. Considering the rising trend of programs, games, music, and movies being downloadable it makes sense. CDs and DVDs are still hanging on, but slowly going the way of cassette tapes and VHS. However, I'm a 90s kid with my original collection of indie music from the 90s and 00s that are difficult to find online. Plus, who wants to repurchase music files when they already have it?This drive allows me to relive fond memories of my teen years of ripping CDs and burning mixed playlists. It says it is also capable of playing DVDs, although I haven't personally tried. The drive was capable of ripping 320kbps MP3 files with each file average 10MB using Windows Media Player, then I was able to add these files to other devices like my smart watch and phone so that I may listen at my leisure without worrying about having a clunky, outdated cd-player. Each file was ripped clearly without any corruption and no damage to the disc. Not to mention it perfectly fits the aesthetic of my gaming PC setup that is all black with green lighting. I really love the geometric design on top. It comes with an additional cable for power (if you need it, but it can draw power from the main cable) and a black drawstring bag for storage. As shown in the picture, the cable connection can be neatly tucked away underneath the drive and can utilize either USB-A or USB-C ports. For me, there are 2 downsides:1)The cable connection is quite short. While this isn't an issue with laptops, with towers it will take some careful thought. However, I was able to make it work fine on my tower by setting it flat on top of the tower and having the drive opening face the side. A little awkward, but not a horrible issue.2)It does not play blu-ray. I understand for the average customer DVDs are still a cheaper option, but blu-rays have been around for nearly 20 years already.Another thing that may potentially be downsides for other customers but doesn't affect me personally is that it is not compatible with chromebooks and can not play game discs over 8.5GB according to the user manual.Overall, I am still very happy with this external disc drive. It is truly plug and go.

Don't bother- spend a few more $ on a brand name
This drive was NOT plug-and-play on my Lenovo laptop running windows 11, which has Windows Media Player installed. the drive would open, accept a disc, and I could hear it spinning up, but it wouldn't read any of several CDs and DVDs I tried. I could hear the disc spinning, starting and stopping, and the laser pickup racheting back and forth, but still not reading data. I went through the suggestions of other buyers; One of them suggested resetting the Region code, so I tried that. The player was, in fact, preset for Region 2 (Europe, Japan and the Middle East). So I went through that process in Windows Device Manager for the reset, and got an error saying that none of my discs were from Region 1 (U.S.), and it wouldn't reset. I've never purchased a disc outside the US, so this was not the case and I tried several, which all work in other players. So next, I got a list of troubleshooting suggestions from the seller, tried them all (twice) and still, nothing.Amazon arranged for the return, which is fine, but that meant another half hour lost driving it to the return drop-off center (might as well buy from a brick-and-morter store if returns aren't picked up). So, after a couple of hours wasted on this piece of junk, I regret not spending more for a drive from a known brand, that likely has a better rate of success.
