Ichi-F: A Worker's Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant

This is my first manga. I like non fiction and I was hesitant to purchase a comic book format on such a subject. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a serious endeavor and the drawings were beautiful and added a lot to the subject matter. The manga did an excellent job of describing the issues working as a low level subcontracting hire in the cleanup of Fukushima. In that it was very informative.However, the book should has to be taken as that - the author is very low on the totem pole of workers, and his information is limited to that. Also, he is, as understandable, very pro recovery, super positive, to the point of minimizing issues. He discounts entirely, for example, the notion that internal contamination (ingesting, inhaling) is a real problem. Dismisses that the increase of thyroid cancer is related to Fukushima and instead claims it is due to increased scans. The three runaway cores are ignored, and the author's major work is on stabilizing cooling to the remaining spent fuel pools. You must take the source into account when evaluating the information, and appreciate the viewpoint of his knowledge and perspective.and evaluate it in context of other sources.If you're wondering if you should purchase this, I would say if you are interested in the subject, or in Japan, by all means do. The cost is minimal in kindle form. The viewpoint (from the beautiful artwork you get it quite visually) of the author is unique in the rarity of getting such a perspective. And it's also quite an enjoyable read.I had no trouble with my 7th generation kindle fire handling this large manga. Most of the manga is in B&W but there are sections in color.

I could hardly put down this graphic memoir, which describes work, workers, working conditions, traffic jams, and even worker's recreation at the Fukushima cleanup. This book is a real page-turner. I learned a lot about how the work is done, weird (to me) multi-layer contracting on the site, suiting up for the work, fuel pools, robots and more. The graphics are great: the author has an artist's eye. Highly recommended.

Wasn’t as amusing as I anticipated. It’s more informational if anything, from the perspective of one individual. I did read it all, but again, it’s not exciting. Ichi-F is all the cleanup— that’s the worst part of a party.

Pre-ordered this book with eager anticipation. All very interesting "insider" information on a catastrophic event and its continuing devastation of our seas, environment and health, all of which is still kept hushed by the governments and mainstream media. Although I really appreciate the firsthand account and details that the author is able to share with us, but once past the initial novelty, the account felt really dry and I got bored halfway through this thick book. It's now tucked somewhere in my library... not sure if I will go back to finish it.

What makes this an especially enjoyable and informative book is its point of view. It puts the reader into the midst of the work force that is dealing with Fukushima disaster. It would be almost as interesting coming from a worker at any industrial site. Still, reporting on the special challenges of working in a radiation-contaminated area is unique. I do not know of any similar book arising from the the Chernobyl accident.

I'm not making a review about the contents of the manga itself as I haven't read all of it but instead would like to talk about the book itself.In the Amazon Kindle edition of the manga, a number of images were mirrored and the original reading direction was flipped causing disorientation and confusion. Therefore I would recommend people to not consider the Amazon edition of the book if you are familiar with manga.

Von den vielen Manga, die über Fukushima entstanden sind, ist dieser hier wohl der am weitesten verbreitete. Der Autor schildert aus seiner Sicht den Tagesablauf und die Erlebnisse der Dekontaminierungstrupps im Katastrophengebiet.Zur Handlung will ich erst einmal nichts weiter verraten. Nur soviel: Es ist eine sehr realistische Darstellung und weder eine verschönende Manga-Adaption des Themas noch ein Aufruf zur Weltrettung indem man Umweltaktivist wird. Und es treten auch keine radioaktiven Monster auf, die durch den Protagonisten bekämpft werden wollen. ;)Was zunächst störend ist, wenn man den Manga in der ebook-Version liest, ist die Art der Aufbereitung für den westlichen Leserkreis.Teilweise werden Bilder gespiegelt, um von links nach rechts lesen zu können. Japanische Texte sind dabei aber in der richtigen Ausrichtung wieder eingefügt, sowie alle Frames mit Autos (solange ein Lenkrad zu sehen ist oder sie auf einer Straße fahren) oder Landkarten wurden wieder "entspiegelt". Auf z. B. Seite 15 unten (Buchseite 13) wurde das allerdings übersehen.Dabei kommt es vor, dass eine kleine Sprechblase mit viel Text gefüllt ist und die darauffolgene große nahezu leer ist und nur ein Wort enthält - da im Original von rechts nach links gelesen wird und ursprünglich die große Blase den umfassenden Text enthielt.Andere Auffälligkeiten fallen erst ins Auge, wenn man sich die Bilder genau ansieht und nicht nur schnell den Manga liest. So bleiben die "entspiegelten" Texte in gespiegelten Frames (ob ein Frame komplett gespiegelt oder nur verschoben wird kommt wohl auf den Inhalt an) in der ursprünglichen Perspektive. Im Original heißt das, vom Leser weg wird der Text kleiner; in der gespiegelten Variante hingegen wird der Text nach "hinten" größer, da die Seiten vertauscht sind. Ein markantes Beispiel ist in der verfügbaren Vorschau auf Seite 13 (Buchseite 11) der Schriftzug "APD".Für diese eher schlechte Anpassung an den westlichen Leser gibt es für das Gesamtergebnis einen Stern Abzug, da in der heutigen Zeit Leser von gedruckten Manga stets auf die richtige Lesereihenfolge hingewiesen werden und es auch für den Papiersparer kein Problem darstellt, zumal es beim wischen/blättern im eBook nicht entscheidend ist ob von "links nach rechts" oder von "rechts nach links" geblättert wird. Dem Verlag ist auf alle Fälle aber anzuerkennen, sich die Mühe gemacht zu haben, die Texte und Bilder mit Autos/Landkarten/Straßen/... nicht seitenverkehrt in das Buch zu lassen und diese aufwendig nachzubearbeiten.Manga: *****eBook: ***

This is a rare and valuable account of what is actually happening at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.It is very enlightening.The author’s message that we should not get jumpy whenever we hear such words as Fukushima and nuclear power is clear.
