Joe Golem: Occult Detective Omnibus
G**R
Epic fantasy horror by Mignola and Golden
I read the first volume, liked it and then decided to get the omnibus and I am glad I did as this is truly an epic fantasy horror adventure set in an alternative New York turned into a American Venice by a large earthquake/mystical event that flooded the lower half of the city with everything going on starting at the second or third floor. The story centers on Simon Church a private consulting detective specializing in occult related incidents who has extended his life span through a mystical bio-mechanical means. Like Nero Wolfe he is too old to do legwork so he has Joe , an amnesiac, do that for him- ranging out investigating occult phenomena or disruptions identified by a steampunk style machine with a large pendulum. Joe is plagued by nightmares of a Golem in the middle ages battling witches. The nightmares are controlled by a tea Church provides - but are they nightmares or real memories? Is Joe a borderline schizophrenic or something not human. The 488 pages of the collected graphic novels build through occult threat after occult threat as more is revealed about Joe , and Church. A complex tale that ends with a truly apocalyptic threat. I was glad to read it all in one volume over many nights as opposed to tracking down each volume and reading them spread out over weeks. If you like this type of story it is well worth the time money and effort. I preferred the art in the first half by Patric Reynolds but he entire book works well both story and art. Review 1046

Enorme aanrader.
