Grenada 1983: Relearning old lessons...
Operation Urgent Fury, the U.S.-led intervention into Grenada in 1983, gets a workmanlike review in this new LatinAmerica@War book. Author Sanjoy Badri-Maharaj walks the reader through the volatile situation in Grenada, and the decision by the U.S. and its regional allies to intervene. The messy conduct of military operations that removed the existing government in Grenada gets a major portion of the text, which is nicely supported by period photographs and a few maps. The author does a decent job dissecting the decision by outsiders to intervene. His review of the military operations is surprising evenhanded, to include the lack of intelligence on the ground that hamstrung much of the initial planning. Not specifically mentioned, and perhaps outside the scope of the book, is that the many mistakes of Urgent Fury prompted a significant review within the United States of its ability to conduct joint operations in a timely manner, a review that paid dividends in the later Operation Desert Storm. Well recommended to students of the conflict.
