The Skye Trail: A Journey Through the Isle of Skye

Reads more like a TV script than a walking guide
A long distance trail on Skye is a great idea and this is the obvious book to buy for anyone considering the best known multi-day walk on Skye. However, it's not designed as a guide for seriously planning the walk or bringing along on the trail. It's basically a book version of the script for a TV series. There are lots of local anecdotes, transcripts of interviews with friends of the author, descriptions of nearby walks/climbs by the author that aren't part of the trail and little practical information of the kind you get in the 'Isles of Skye' Cicerone guide. There are plenty of photographs and they aren't bad but there not many real 5 star pictures. The description reads like the author did the walk as a sequence of segments for planning then as day trips with a TV crew rather than as one continuous walk with a loaded up rucksack and no access to a car.

Cracking book
To be brutally honest I expected the usual fayre of route description, places to stay etc, i.e. a fairly practical contribution to the plethora of books written about the treasures of the island's natural assets. What I got in addition to those necessary details was a brilliant description of the island's history and politics. McNeish really brought the route to life and portrayed the atmosphere fantastically. Clearly aiming to add this route to the well known ones such as The West Highland Way, I hope he succeeds and when I am there later this year I hope to have time to explore some of it myself.Excellent piece of work

The Right Size for the Daysack!
An interesting book with the longest Foreword I've read to date! Still, it will fit neatly into a Daysack or Rucksack and isn't too weighty a tome in either read-ability or for humfing about.
