Rye Tyler my new hero!
A real surprise with lots of twists and unexpected turns. A great read and truly unputdownable! You'll have to read it yourself and see if Mr. L'Amour surprises you like it did me. It was well worth my time, and my time is precious.

THE BEST OF THE BEST
I have read many of Louis l'amour's books but this is by far the best. As an avid reader I love a well-written book with glorious imagery and accurate history and perfect words. This author's work is usually very good but this book is exceptional in every way and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys good literature.

The original best.
When I read Louis L'Amour, and I have read his books a lot, I realize that he is the original. The writer that set the high tradition of being a real man and doing the right thing even when it's extremely hard, as in John Wayne's characters. Louis L'Amour taught us that "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." I love that.

Excellent
This is one of L'Amour's best. The protagonist is a complex character with a firm grasp of right and wrong, but goal to reach and a moral dilemma to resolve. And he has a steady sidekick, too. It would make great movie, but would have be carefully done. Highly recommended.

A Classic Coming of Age Tale in Unforgiving Times
To Tame A Land is a fast paced story about a boy named Rye who is forced to grow up after he is orphaned in Indian Territory. He learns to live off the land, hunt, break horses, run cattle, earn respect, and kill when necessary. Problem is, if you're too good with a gun, killers looking to make a name for themselves come for you.The writing style is full of old west slang and the descriptions of the environments are brief and near perfect. It pulls you into the story. The pivotal scenes of this book are well written and the scenes that link them are brief to keep up the pace. Although this book is154 pages, it's got a bit of everything: friendship, wisdom, action, one liners, and love. It's a great read for anyone who wants a taste of action in the old west.

My favorite Louis L'amour book
I've read every book of his that was published. I have about a dozen favorites, but for me, this is the best one. I read it again every year or two. If you haven't read this one, make sure you do.

Louis L'Amour, always a sure thing!
I am an avid fan of Louis L'Amour. There's not one book he's ever written that I don't like. I think this is one of his best, including Flint and Cherokee Trail it's one of my favorites. If you want to feel like you're right there with one of those gun slinging Cowboys read Louis L'Amour because he makes everyone of his novels real. You can see the characters you can see the country you can be there. Only way he could have written more

A Boy Becomes A Man In The Rough West
This is a coming of age story. From a boy of 12 to a man of means. Ryan learns the hard lessons of a hard land. He discovers that getting known as a gunfighter isn't such a good thing. From the wagon trails and indian raids to cattle drives and gambling dens this book showcases a slice of the old west. I like the characters, compitant and independent men and women. A thread of romance as usual holds things together in a L'amour.

Excellent Western
From the very first page the reader is on the journey with the young narrator, Ryan Tyler. The character is likeable and believable. The author obviously researched well. The characters Ryan meets on his journey are sometimes violent, but always convincing. The landscape is well-described but not lengthy. The short paragraphs make this a fast-moving novel. Very enjoyable.

Top notch Louis L'Amour western well up to standard and ...
Top notch Louis L'Amour western well up to standard and the detail in his descriptions of places is exceptional and can only be described from personal experience. Especially the routes travelled over by the hero. You feel you could almost follow and find your own way over the trails as they are described.
