"Reader's Digest" Complete Guide to Sewing

Best sewing book ever
I bought this book in 1978 because I saw it in the fabric store. The lady who worked there said it is the best book. My sister taught me to sew and I took home economics, but I wanted to continue teaching myself. This book was a huge help. I sewed toddler clothing for my nephew and niece and it was a good way to learn since the pieces were so small. The drawings in this book are excellent and you can teach yourself to sew in no time. Very good book.

Very thorough
Beautiful vintage book. Definitely shows you details of "how to". Pictures and step-by-step are fantastic.

excellent
this is an excellent choice of book for anybody who wants to learn sewing. I used it for my college text book. but it is a perfect book for any beginner or intermidiate level. you don't have to be a college student to use this book. eventhough I am not a student anymore, I still refer back to this book to follow the step by step instruction on how to apply a zipper and how to sew certain types of buttonhole, seams. Or how to cut the fabric or prepare the fabric for draping. it also shows how to use the ready made pattern sold in the market more effeciently. highly recomment it.

Better than I thought.
My sister told me to look for one of these books in a thrift store since it was old. I found this one in my first search and it’s in far better than my sister’s old one. It’s nice to replace a treasure.

Best Sewing Book
This old edition is the best! While there are plenty of sewing books and some new ones are good in their own right, this classic is still right-on. Don't buy a later edition; stick with the 1970s version. It explains things in great detail, has excellent illustrations, and covers all the basics of beginning sewing, complex tailoring, some home decor, and everything in between. As a 40-year average-skill sewer I learned something new as I turned the first pages of my library copy; within minutes I ran to the computer to find one online. So happy!

Great all around sewing book
I had heard about this particular edition of this book on one of the sewing blogs and finally purchased it. I love it. Great illustrations, wonderful instructions - this is a wonderful addition to anyone's sewing library and is highly recommended for a beginner. As a point of contrast, I have a Vogue Sewing Book (not the right title, but close enough) from the same era and the Reader's Digest is hands down the better book, primarily because of the illustrations. Go get this one, you won't regret it.

Worth the Wait
This book is a thorough sewing course at your fingertips. One of my favorite youtubers for sewing recommended this edition of the book(1978) and now I can see why. It covers the basics of hand stitching up to advanced garrment construction and tailoring techniques. My only complaint is that it was mailed in a flimsy cardboard shipping box that was obviously torn and taped up when it got to my house. More care should be taken by the seller to ship books in sturdy water resistent packaging especially if it is going overseas. I feel very fortunate my book arrived with no water damage and in good condition. Other than that I'm very pleased with my book, thank you!

Gold Standard in Sewing Instruction
My wife was looking for this to use with our daughters, as she used it during her own education. It was the real deal and is perfect, providing details and instructions in sewing techniques to a very high degree, in ways that modern, contemporary texts do not. Her copy was left behind when moving homes and countries decades ago, so thrilled to be able to obtain a new copy.Copy is in perfect condition and delivery from Amazon very speedy as always - even to Australia.

Yep this is a fantastic book for anyone that does any type of sewing
It covers everything about sewing and repairing this book is yet again handy to have as a reminder of how to do things and as a tutorial with diagrams for those who are learning right from the start

Absolute must-have
As someone new to sewing I wanted advice for vintage and “old school” techniques- this book really is the complete guide! The version I received was dated 1983 which is not a problem as it is a direct reprint of the original 1970’s text. Having researched a little the newer ones are described as revised and updated- something I did NOT want. I honestly don’t think I will ever need another sewing book (unless it’s to specialise in embroidery, lace making etc). The book I received (very quickly) was in such good used condition and still had the dust cover- I couldn’t have been more thrilled.

I'm so glad I found this book
I had this book when I was in college many years ago but it got thrown out in error. When I came across this on line I just had to get it. It arrived in better condition than I anticipated, it showed some age but it is an old book.

Great book
I have been a on off sewist for many years, this book was suggested to me, and I wish I had this book years ago, it would have saved me buying all the others, it might be an old book, but all all still good relevant information for today.
