Jimmy Stewart Portrays Monty Stratton - Both Were Real Heroes
The Stratton Story Monty Stratton was a Wagner, Texas farmer who lived with his widowed mother (played by Agnes Moorehead). He is discovered by a down-on-his-luck baseball scout (played by Frank "Wizard of Oz" Morgan) playing sandlot baseball. Morgan introduces himself and walks the ten miles with Stratton back to his home to try and convince Stratton's mother that her son is a big league pitching prospect. Mom is skeptical of both the scout and his claims; however he is welcomed to dinner and stays the night. At breakfast, the next morning, Mrs. Stratton is seemingly unconvinced. She surprises Monty by agreeing for him to go to California where the Chicago White Sox are in spring training. She even gives him $5.The scout and prospect hitch-hike to California. The manager of the White Sox, Jimmy Dykes (playing himself) agrees to give Stratton a try-out and eventually offers both the player and the scout a contract. Morgan's character becomes the White Sox pitching coach. Monty meets his future wife Ethel (played by June Allyson) on a blind date. The blind date arranger likes Ethel better than his date and Stratton recognizes the other woman is becoming depressed by the inattention. He promptly escorts Ethel out of the restaurant under a pretext unknown to Ethel that leads to a misunderstanding of Stratton's intentions. So the blind date, as is often the case, was a mild disaster. Monty however is able to convince her he deserves a second chance and the romance begins.Stratton is with the White Sox as a seldom used pitcher, until during a game in which the Sox are being routed by the Yankees, he is called in as a relief pitcher. He is promptly clobbered. He is then sent down to minor league Omaha for "seasoning". It is in Omaha The romance with Ethel blooms into marriage. After a successful minor league tour, he is recalled to Chicago and becomes an All-Star pitcher. The main point of the Stratton story is his struggle with life following an off season hunting accident that caused him to lose a leg. His reaction to becoming an ex-baseball player is at first full of doubt and self pity. But with the help of Ethel and a realization he was treating her as if she wasn't enough, he returns to be the old Monty. Then he learns how, even with an artificial leg, to pitch again.I will not reveal the ending of the story. It is an up beat conclusion that makes a person feel good about life.

A dramatic tale off and on the baseball field
Monty Stratton (James Stewart) was a farmer who liked to pitch pick-up baseball games before baseball discovered him. He found his love, Ethel (played by June Allyson), his profession - baseball pitching for the Chicago White Sox. Then tragedy hit him hard, he lost his leg which became infected after a tragic hunting accident. Stratton gives into his anger an depression before he decides he cannot give up on life or being a man, husband and father to his toddler son, Monty, Jr. Driven by his wife and his passion for baseball, he returns to pitch before retiring, again. This is an inspirational film about overcoming. It is masterfully directed by Sam Wood who directed the classic baseball film, The Pride of the Yankees. It boasts a stellar supporting cast of Frank Morgan, Agnes Morehead, Bill Williams and real-life baseball celebrities Jimmy Dykes and Bill Dickey. This movie will make you cheer.

Not just a baseball movie- 5 stars +
There have been many baseball and other sports films made, but "The Stratton Story" is, at least in my opinion, one of the best ever made. Pairing James Stewart with June Allyson was perfection in casting, and adding Agnes Moorehead and Frank Morgan to the roster made this team unbeatable. This movie is about a ball player, but it is more about overcoming disabilities, depression, and other negatives that life throws at people. Don't be surprised if you get a little choked up watching this great film. I highly recommend "The Stratton Story".

Great movie
I saw this long before I saw "In Harms way" or Men go Honour" I almost lost my left leg but I was blessed in finding a great doctor. Even if I hadn't found him I would have been all right.

Excellent movie to watch, an oldie but a goodie!
This is a wonderful story about overcoming a physical handicap to be able to pitch again. After losing a leg and with the encouragement of a loving wife, Monty Stratton was able come back and pitch again in the Major Leagues. A family friendly movie for a Saturday night.

Inspiring True Story of Baseball Pitcher Monty Stratton
Was not expecting much and was very surprised at how good this movie is. Old black and white movie with closed caption. If you like old movies and you like baseball, you will like this movie. The fact that it is a true story makes it even better.

Sweet and lovely movie
A rely sweet movie, and it's starring June Allyson and James Steward, not much can go wrong!- it gets a bit too sweet at times, and of course taking the time this movie was made in consideration, they probably couldn't have made a wooden leg more believable, but since i was watching it with the eyes of today, it just seemed like it was too obvious that it wasn't real. But with that being said i just love it and them - and great picture and sound!
