I'm new to mtg. what is the best deck to start with?

For new players I would recommend simple strategy, not combo nor control, from the 22 Challenger decks I would say the gruul stompy ...but if you are new to mtg I would suggest to try with any of the Commaner preconstructed decks, rather than the Standard challenger, the Commander would give you more cards, and the opportunity to play against more decks that playing standard.
