The way to tell if your part has gone bad is to run the car for a bit, then turn it off. Pull out the vacuum tube that fits in the front of the valve and smell if there is any gasoline present. If you can smell gas, then this valve has gone bad. If you are standing in front of 20 year old car, don't bother trying to diagnose the problem, just replace the part. There is a rubber seal inside that has probably just failed because of age.See youtube for directions on how to relieve the fuel pressure on the system before attempting to remove the old part, or you will get sprayed with gasoline. After replacing I noticed a little better fuel consumption, and a little less of a fuel rich smell coming from the exhaust.

I bought this for my 1988 BMW and it worked when I tested it. I ran the car once and parked it in a garage (medical issues prevented the restoral process). I started the car a few weeks later and fuel out of the vacuum line. Its out of warranty and I am forced to buy another one. You get what you pay for. Going to local trusted parts people.
