this is an excellent novel
I bought this not expecting it to be particularly well-written. The subject matter is sufficiently compelling that I would imagine many publishers would forgive less than stellar writing or story telling ability. But this novel is superb - the story itself is interesting (irrespective of historical import), the characters are very well presented, the language is often poetic, the sensory imagery is extremely engaging - this man can not only tell a story, he can write (not the same thing at all). But, even if Mr Ianko were a mediocre writer, this novel would still be worth reading, for the insight into what life was like for ordinary people during the first genocide of the 20th century.
