Classic X-Men story - but goes best with Wedding and Phalanx Covenant
This is THE Magneto story, going back and re-depicting his origins for the more adult 90s era. We get the death of his wife and daughter (adapted for the APOCALYPSE movie), and then his most iconic attempt at taking over the world, using Avalon, his asteroid base. The best character work is between him and Professor X. They are less the best friends as seen in the movies, and more classic hero and villain rivals. But this is interesting, as it requires Professor X to make a pretty difficult decision as to how to deal with this genocidal foe. It also allows Magento and his followers to do some pretty despicable stuff that is fun to read. Nightcrawler and Shadowcat crossover from Excalibur. Colossus makes some dark moves. Wolverine has a really rough go of it. The x-jet atmosphere re-entry sequence in Wolverine #75 alone makes the collection worth the read. Really thrilling, blockbuster action drawn by the likes of John Romita Jr. and Adam Kubert.THAT BEING SAID - this part of the story does intertwine with THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX and PHALANX COVENANT to some degree, so it might be best to pick up all three at once. Although, you can read one after the other and basically still get what's going on.

Good but old
If you're not familiar with the story, it's an awesome read with great art (cover drawing isn't great but the interior is excellent) but it's an older edition with very heavy paper (a positive) but with a fragile spine that prevents you from opening the book more fully as you can the more modern editions.

Convoluted & Overlapping = Purchasing Trap
BUYER BEWARE: This is a needless edition to the Fatal Attractions storyline. If you are wanting the entire storyline, book1 and book2 are necessary. This "New Edition" overlaps book1 and book2. It's more expensive to purchase both books; however, it will miss: Uncanny issues 301, 302, and 305; Annual 17; X-Factor 87, 88, 89, 90, 91; and Unlimited 1. (That's a total of 10 issues.) Having yet read the series, I am disappointed that I cannot return the digital copy I bought of the "New Edition". The explosion and overlap of issues from various branches of the X-Men franchise is a hallmark characteristic of the 1990s.
