Q: What's the total length? I've been looking for decent counting beads for running stairs, ideally something I can turn into a bracelet.

Total length is 5000 meters. Or in your case you could use it for 5000 stairs. Run 10 stairs, move one bead down. When you get to the 100th stair, move down one of the uppperbeads. I don't think you will be able to use this as a bracelet without taking it apart and lengthening it. But that will be easy since its made from 550 cord. Just untie, splice in a piece to make it the length you want, then re-tie and re melt the knots. Good luck!

Q: How can this weigh 3 pounds???

Obviously it doesn't. But it is not simply a typo either because if the product weighed 3 oz, how could the shipping weight with packaging be 1.6 oz? It couldn't. The weights listed in Amazon's Product Information section are always wrong. I have never seen a product with correct weights or dimensions listed there.

Q: Can this be used for counting miles?

Hello! Ye. It works this way :For every 100 meters the user walks, one of the lower beads is pulled down. When the ninth of the lower beads is pulled, the user has walked 900 meters. When the user has walked 1000 meters, one of the upper beads is pulled down, and all the lower beads are pulled back up.Using this method the user must know the number of paces walked in 100 meters. An experienced user can also adapt the pace count for each hundred meters depending on the terrain. When using this method the user does not have to calculate distance from number of paces.
