Scharwenka and Sauer - Should Be Performed More!
Stephen Hough is one of the greatest pianists of this day and age, and I was glad to find this recording of the Scharwenka Concerto #4 in f minor, a great but rarely-played work. Hough gives it a very polished reading. Had there been more great performances of it in the years around the time it was written (circa 1910), it may have survived and become standard repertoire. Like so many great works, it unjustly fell away. I'm glad I discovered this concerto on Youtube. I'd heard of the 4 Scharwenka concertos in the past but never actually heard them. The #4 is probably the best of the four, and apparently Scharwenka felt it was his one of his magnum opi. The fourth movement is a really hair-raising romp. I love it. Not quite on the same level as the Saint-Saens #2 or Chopin concerti, but deserving of equal time, as it were. The Emil Sauer concerto, also on this disc, is a solid work too but again, unjustly neglected. Aren't people sick of hearing the Mozart and Beethoven Concertos in concerts?! I know I am! I guarantee, people would start clamouring for the Scharwenka #4 if enough people played it. There aren't more than a couple recordings of these concerti on Youtube or elsewhere online. I'd say Hough's are probably the best of any out there.

A Favorite CD
I selected this CD based on the lovely music it represents. It is a wonderful CD to add to a collector's library of fine music,There are many poor representations of the classics, but this one is most enjoyable.

Hough's sublime piano virtuoso
The rarely performed piano concertos are very wonderfully executed by Hough and my favorite is the Sauer 3rd movement. It is transcendent.

Five Stars
Rare recording - very lyrical piece, especially 3rd Movement / Cavatina - nothing to do with Stanley Myers !

Beautiful but not tier 1 concertos
I own all 66 piano and violin concertos in this series. This like all of them are worth owning. To the untrained ear I cannot really distinguish one from another. Are they hidden treasures? I think a few. None of them are mediocre....they just are not as memorable as Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Grieg, or Brahms.
