This is a great shovel and according to the following it is made in USA. It is very well constructed. We just got 15" of snow and it did the shop. We have gone through a number of shovels and this one I expect to last the rest of my life FOREST HILL MANUFACTURING HOMEOWNER ALUMINUM SCOOP SHOVEL (48-INCH) This shovel is made in the USA by Lancaster County Craftsman. Dimensions: 30-inch Handle, 14.5-inch Wide Scoop, 48-Inch overall length. Approximate Weight: 4 lbs. 2-ounces

Q: Is this a good shovel for heavy snow/ice?

The shovel is solid and well-built, so it could probably handle the load. However, it's also a really large shovel and the weight of heavy snow/ice it can hold would be a challenge for anyone other than an Olympian. So, the shovel can probably handle it, but can the shoveler?

Q: what is the diameter of the wooden part of the handle in case i ever have to replace the "D" grip?

This answer is a little more complicated than it seems. The wooden shaft is 1.526 inches, 38.76 mm if you're interested in metric. At the top of the wooden handle it has been turned to a smaller outside diameter to allow fitment of the D handle. I am guessing that the turned O.D. is roughly 3/16 th inches less than the O.D. of the shaft of the wooden handle.

52” overall. The exposed wood is 19”. It’s heavy duty.
