This Is Good Saffron
This is good saffron – not super strong flavor but good. I do know that I enjoyed this saffron & it tasted & reacted like genuine saffron. If it’s not genuine, then this is a really good fake. There is a lot of fake saffron on the market but I think this is real for the following reasons:-When I opened the container, it really smelled like saffron – it had that unique hay/honey scent.-When I rubbed it between my fingers, it stained my fingers.-I soaked it in tepid water. It took some time for the color to turn that distinct golden color. Fake saffron usually dyes the water very fast because it is a fiber with a dye.-The threads stayed the same bright red color after soaking for 30 minutes & after cooking. Fake saffron that has been dyed red will lose its color.-The threads did NOT disintegrate in cooking. Fake saffron usually breaks down depending on what material they are using.-The soaked threads had a wider end & a skinny end (trumpet shape) – fake saffron does not.-The soaked threads stained my fingers & kept a thread-like shape when gently rolled between my fingers. Eventually they break apart. Fake saffron usually disintegrates easily.-I tasted it & it tasted like saffron.-I tasted the soaking water & it had a saffron flavor-My rice dish had a wonderful saffron flavor.-It is sealed & packaged in a plastic box. (That doesn’t mean it’s real, I’m just describing the presentation.)There is a harvest date: 2021/NOV – today is 3/14/2022. Packed in India.

Nice red Saffron Threads
I've never used saffron and I wanted to see what made this so expensive. So we got this, but then what to do with it? We decided to make some Aroz Caldo with it. We normally put safflower in it to give it its classic yellow coloring. As I've seen that some people use saffron in it as well, we figured why not give this a try. So that's what we set out to try it on.Before we used it, we did some research on it. First the saffron threads are all in good shape. I don't see any which are misshapen or broken. They all have a nice consistent dark reddish orange color. It has a sweet rich grassy smell to it. It produces a nice yellow colored water when soaked and the threads themselves don't fade. So this all matches up with what we found is good saffron. We also discovered a little goes a long way, which is good as we normally use significantly more safflower in Aroz Caldo than we did the saffron. Using the saffron in the dish gave it an interesting new flavor which we've never experienced before. It was subtle as Aroz Caldo uses ginger, but it had a new earthy grassy flavor which we really enjoyed. We very much liked it and will likely use it again and in other dishes as well. I can't believe I waited so long in my life to try it out. Considering how many threads are in the 1 gram container, and how many we used, this will last for quite a while.

as expected
I am not an expert on saffron, but this looks exactly as pictured and works as expected. I feel like it's a good value as a little bit goes a long way.I've only used a few strands in rice, and it really made a difference.I'll be exploring more ways of cooking with saffron: I like the flavor it adds to the dish.

The real thing
There’s a lot of fake and adulterated saffron out there- in fact, I’d say the majority of what I’ve seen sold as saffron is either heavily adulterated or just plain fake. There are two things you should look for in saffron, and this easily passes both tests. First, the smell: As soon as you open the package you’re hit by the unmistakeable aroma of real saffron. It just pours out and seems to fill the air around you. Second, the shape of the threads. They’re called threads, but they’re actually the stamens of a particular crocus flower, and don’t look like threads at all. They’re long tapered, and flattened, with an unmistakeable appearance. Tens dollars may seem like a lot for just a gram, but this is enough to last me a long time, using only a few threads at a time. Half a dozen is enough for a pot of bouillabaisse.

Very good quality saffron
I've been using saffron for a while and have become pretty good at spotting the fake stuff. A couple of things I look for as soon as I open it is if it's sopping wet or somewhat dry and how it smells. Good saffron should smell like hay, not flowers and not perfumy, if it smells all flowery they've sprayed it with something. It shouldn't be wet either, it should be pretty dry but not turning to dust dry. If it's too wet they added water or something so it weighs more. This saffron had the right feel and smell to it. I then added some to a cup of cold water. It took 15 minutes for it to add the yellow color to the water, this is another good sign. Saffron that dumps a red color right away has been dyed. Also if it sinks you know it's fake. This saffron performed how I expect good saffron to.I then spread the saffron on a white filter paper. This is so I can look at the shape, color and size. Good saffron should have a trumpet head and gradually slim down as it goes toward the other end. Sometimes there will be lighter orange curls at the end. The higher quality saffron is the less of those curly ends. Overall this saffron looks pretty good. It's, of course, not the very high end saffron but it is a very nice saffron. The price for this grade of saffron is great though.
