Q: I have tried 2 of these and i can't get the batteries to work. tried several batteries as well. is there something im missing?

Q: Does the display timer stay on during countdown? Or does it turn off to save battery after it hasnt been handled in a while?

It stays on to show the countdown for convenience and after counting down, it stays 00.00 because the LCD display's power consumption is minimal.
