Seachem ParaGuard 250ml

Seachem ParaGuard is a fantastic product! I’ve been using it for my African cichlids, and it has worked wonders in keeping them healthy and free from parasites. It effectively eradicates ectoparasites, fungal, bacterial, and even viral issues without harming the fish or stressing them out. I appreciate that it’s a safer alternative to formalin while still being highly effective. Plus, it’s versatile and works well in both freshwater and marine setups. I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my cichlids' health and behavior since using it. This is now a staple in my aquarium care routine. Highly recommended!

ParaGuard is an awesome aid for any fish enthusiast. I like how it can be used in the entire tank (no hospital/quarantine tanks), that it dissipates after a couple of days (requires daily additions until problems resolve), because it wont interfere with your filter media in canister or other filters, AND because it's not a strong antibiotic thatd potentially harm other fish that arent sick. SeaChems medications such as Kanaplex or Metroplex are very good medications to use AFTER 50% water changes higher temperature or Epsom Salts, or ParaGuard seem to not be as effective 1st few days. Can be added into food for easier absorption as well or in water column to reach gills. If fish seem very sick, then these medications are the ones to use in a hospital/quarantine tank if wanting to avoid treating entire tank. All of SeaChem products are legit (I wish they paid me lol) as I've used them for well over 10yrs. Started off with Prime, the ONLY water conditioner aquarisuts should honestly use, GarlicGuard food supplement is extremely effective and keeps fish immunity elevated throughout life, ParaGuard for the reasons mentioned above, etc. If I had 1 brand to use for my fish, u bet its SeaChem. The good customer service is also an added bonus :) Lastly folks, feed your fish SOAKED FISH FOOD in water or Garlic Guard (soften pellets, absolutely NO HARD FOOD!) along with some peas ONCE A WEEK to avoid any SWIMBLADDER ISSUES as this event is bad for a fish that cant orient itself. Pea fiber will flush out their bladders and preventing this EASILY PREVENTABLE illness. This along with weekly 50% water changes should prevent roughly 75% of potential problems. Other 25% remains in how many fish are stocked, if all fish are compatible, etc as there are many variable to consider in aquariums inclusive of water source... that's where my Prime comes in hehe :)

I get most of my fish through mail order. By the time they get to me they are often starting to show symptoms of any disease they've EVER been exposed to. This helps. I have successfully treated fish with ich, fin rot and body fungus. You do need to keep the treatments up, though - just putting in a dose for one day won't be enough. The directions are to use one capful for every 10 gallons daily. "Repeat as long as required as long as fish show no signs of stress." You can also use this as a preventative dip for new fish (which I highly, HIGHLY recommend) by putting half a capful per gallon of the dip. The good news is that not only do you not have to take the charcoal out of your filter and you do not have to worry about snails or shrimp, either. I did a heavy series of doses on one tank that had cherry shrimp in it, and not one died or even looked sick. If you keep fish, you really need to have medications on hand to treat them when something breaks out. Early treatment is key. I keep this and maracyn 2 on hand so I can nip diseases in the bud. Prazipro has a good reputation, too, but I have not tried that. Maybe there is a better broad spectrum treatment available than ParaGuard, but I have not found it yet. I would definitely like to hear people's feedback if they've found something that works better. By the way, this is what the bottle says: "ParaGuard is the only fish and filter safe aldehyde based (10% by weight) parasite control product available... contains no formaldehyde or methanol and will not alter pH... employs a blend of aldehydes, malachite green and fish protective polymers... effectively eradicates many ectoparasites (ich, etc) and external fungal/bacterial/viral lesions (eg, fin rot)."

Works great

I used this product to treat Ick in my tank. I had the following delicate freshwater fish. Emperor tetras, black emperor tetras, blue neons, sterbai corys, bronze corys, albino corys, galaxay rasbora, and some other fish. I LOST a lot of fish by using this medication. Now I will be honest and tell you that I did not do enough water changes based on the directions. I did dose less than what the bottle recommended. I killed probably about $50-$60 of fish. Some are very difficult to get again. If this medication killed so many of my fish I hate to see what the "harsh stuff" could do. I would still buy this product, but I would go about treatment differently. My recommendation is to do this if you have ick and have sensitive fish (Tetras, elephant nose fish, $$$$$ fish etc) REMOVE THEM!!!! Take them out. If they are not infected don't treat them. If they sick are....still take them out, put them in a completely separate container, and treat 1/3 dose, warm the water ~78F-80F, and do 25% water changes every 2-3 days. Make sure you clean water is the same temp as the hospital tank. Make sure you fish can withstand 78-80 F. This temp will speed up the cycle of the ick parasite. If ick was in your main tank, sorry you gotta treat the tank. The parasite actually drops off the fish and goes into the gravel. Paraguard only works in the life cycle when the ick parasite goes from gravel back to fish. IF you have hardy fish in your tank, go ahead and treat the tank as normal. REMEMBER, gravel, ornaments, plants....all take up space. So you may have a 20 gal tank, but only 15 gal of it is water. Treat the water volume, not the listed tank volume. Unsure, well dose less but does longer and I would still do water changes. This medication worked but like all medications be careful and be smart about dosage. A great idea for a hospital tank is the Tidy Cat plastic liter pals. I hang a filter on the side of the liter container. Works great.

I love all things Seachem! I haven't had to use ParaGuard yet, just have it in case of an emergency. Update on ParaGuard: First time having to use it for ich and it's working as expected. Be patient, especially if you have loaches. But within a week my tetras cleared up nicely and the loaches are sticking it out a little longer, as expected. Be prepared, ich will often look worse before it gets better. Side note to those blaming the product for killing their fish: As someone stated, check your dose. Too much or too little may have adverse effects if you're treating incorrectly. Corydoras - I noticed a claim the ParaGuard killed ALL of their corydoras. I have a species tank of cory cats and have used this before to prevent secondary infection and was sucessful. Primary infection was undetected, therefore I could not hold ParaGuard responsible for fatalities. Cory diseases can easily go unnoticed until you start losing a few and by then it's too late. I lost 3 within two days for undetectable reasons and treated the rest (12) immediately with no other losses. Bottom line, don't hate the player, hate the game! ParaGuard is a great product and you will be doing your fish a disservice trying to add meds that are too strong or even none at all. Spend the extra few bucks and keep it on hand. And more importantly, take a minute and READ about the possibilities of what you may be dealing with before just jumping right in. Don't just take the advice from the first blog you read. If you take the time to buy the fish, take the time to understand their needs.

This product works really great. After an outbreak of Ich - which I caught early, fortunately - I saw visible improvement after only 48 hours of using ParaGuard. Most of the spots were gone from my fish after about 4 days. A week later they are completely cured. Even better, Paraguard does not seem to harm freshwater shrimp, snails or plants. I have Amano Shrimp and Nerite snails in the aquarium, and they are doing just fine. Although not recommended, other reviewers have stated there wasn't a problem so I thought I'd risk using it. I wouldn't overdose with invertebrates present, but the recommended dosage doesn't seem to hurt them. In my one prior outbreak of ich, I used an herbal product that is safe for shrimp, but it took MUCH longer to work. (And it made the water smell like garlic - ewww). My aquarium is 120 gallons and very heavily planted with live plants. I've seen no effect on my plants, so I'd say it doesn't harm them either. This was my first time to use Paraguard and I would definitely use it again. (Hopefully I won't have to though!) I bought a couple extra bottles to keep on hand just in case.

I bought it because of the reviews and like that the products by Seachem are less toxic to the fish than other brands out there.... But in my case, while it cured the Ick in about 7 days, unfortunately it did nothing for the probable fin rot and simultaneous columnaris aka cotton mouth that followed the Ick. In the mean time, I lost more fish....And the poor guys died gasping. The common ick treatment of increasing the heat and then adding salt also aggravated the columnaris. : / Sucks. I did everything I could think of....and still lost fish. If you want to cure ick this is a product you an use. It does get rid of the ick. Very few of my fish were happy though. They remained at the bottom, with clamped fins, except my guppies and some who were gasping for air despite having more air stones in place... And fewer still were eating anything...I don't know how they survived though... Today, I decided that I needed to try something new and gave them half the dose of Tetra All in One halo protection and they were all to my surprise mostly eating....and swimming about like normal. Yay! On a positive note though, the ghost shrimp and amano shrimp were not harmed with Paraguard. I did take them out when treating the tank today with Tetra All in One, just because I had no idea of its effect on the shrimp and didn't want to take a chance. Also, I gave the fish have Tetra All in One in 3 divided doses (I took the daily dose and only gave them a third of it at a time.) because I didn't know how they would react. Additionally, with the initial 1/3 dose I would still be able to quickly remove the medication and the toxicity would obviously be very low. Also, since I've been medicating them I knew their bodies may not be able to handle the full dose all at once. Pros: Ghost and amano shrimps were ok Ick will disappear in about 7 days No need to constantly change the water after each dose Easy to dose using the cap, no guess work Cons: Takes too long to cure the ick Will not cure secondary infections aka fin rot, columnaris = cotton mouth Tips: 1. Quarantine tank: Always keep a quarantine tank for fish, shrimp, snails, frogs, plants....Don't make my idiotic and senseless mistake. But a plastic critter cage from petco for 6.99 or walmart for 5.99. There is a hole where you knock the tabs off and can add the air tube. Get a small airstone and a cheap whisper air pump for say a 10 gallon. Look this investment will save you money, the headache of cleaning up the tank constantly, checking on each fish, the hours spent online figuring out other methods to treat the poor fish, and misery of watching fish die that you should have been able to protect since you were the one who decided their fate would be your aquarium.... That's the worst part. There are tons of "I wish I did this instead..." Also, in the quarantine tank make sure to use the all in one or any other broad spectrum treatment.... 2. In the beginning, use half the dose and see how your fish react...then gradually increase the dose to what is mentioned on the box/ container. 3. Invest in some long gloves....You can buy them on amazon. 4. Clean up Use hydrogen peroxide and/ or rubbing alcohol on your hands after first washing your hands with soap. Clean all surfaces with this too... You don't want to get something yourself nor do you want to infect any vulnerable person or pet in the house. It's so easy to dunk our hands in but on the first day of treatment I broke a dish and cut myself up very badly. I had no choice. I still would not risk it with no cuts though....

I have used this product for hole in the head for discus...and used it lesser than recommended doses and guess my discus was cured without keeping it in a hospital tank.... amazing product

This is a very nice medicament. I like that you must put some of it every day and doesn't modify the appearance of the water. It is the only one that had really solved a problem until now. It solved the ICH (white spots) in just few days.
