Q: Can the branch sections be removed to make the stand shorter?

You can't remove sections to make the stand shorter, just the branches that hold the jewelry can be removed. They offer another version (of the same jewelry organizer) that mounts to the wall instead of freestanding. I have a friend that has this version and loves it!

No, the sections slide down over a metal rod.

Q: Can the crystal ball be left off without compromising the structural integrity?

Yes, the crystal top can be left off. You would want to substitute a thumbscrew or just a screw on top so the connectors are held in place.
