Great book, mixed feelings on the show it’s about
This book is a bit of a double edged sword for masters of the universe fans. Revelations has been the marmite of Eternia it seems, you either loved it or hated it. Myself I sit in the middle, I loved some of the ideas and the visuals, but the voice acting for some characters (Mark Hamill I’m looking at you) the heavy a focus on Teela and Evil Lyn, He Man’s death, and the weird juxtaposition between 3D CGI and the hand drawn anime style were elements I didn’t enjoy. I have loves and hates about it, but hey nothings perfect right?!The cover art of the book is beautiful, really gorgeous, and when I first saw this image as the promo for the show I was so excited as it encapsulates everything that I wanted the show to be - all those excellent and much loved characters battling and trying to outdo each other, including some such as clamp champ, Stinkor, Faker and scareglow who never got to appear in the eighties cartoon. I was gagging to see them get starring roles - finally after 40 years!Sadly the cover doesn’t really sum up the series, you could erase 90% of the characters from the cover. The show had some great character designs (as this book is testimony to) but didn’t use them effectively, 90% of characters getting nothing more than a 30 second cameo or being killed off within seconds of being shown.Same goes for the classic toy vehicles like land shark, roton, stridor etc, as well as creatures such as Panthor, they’re in there alright, but after a few seconds either blow up or die. You’re like “awesome it’s panthor..:oh he died” “awesome it’s landshark…oh..it got blown up”It felt like a slap in the face when so much of the series is spent on Teela acting like a brat and like the whole world revolves around her. I feel there was room to develop her journey whilst also giving other characters screen time. I have zero problem with Teela, Andra (who?) evil Lyn etc taking a major role in the story, it’s just that SO much time was spent on them at the expense of other characters (Stinkor, Scareglow, Triklops, Trap Jaw, Faker etc) that for many it took them ‘out’ of the world they know and love.Time was also wasted on a bizzare ‘heaven’ preternia scenario that made zero sense and was just a way of shoehorning in king Grayskull, he-ro and vikor whilst giving them terrible dialogue. The designs of them look good, the voice acting not so much, All three of them suffer vocally but are beaten by the terrible voices for Stinkor, mer man, Sarah Michelle Gellars Queen Marlena (Marlena sounding like buffy is just ‘weird’) and skeletor, who is literally just the Joker, so far as even calling Evil Lyn ‘Linny’ as if she’s Harley Quinn. In contrast to the series the book is actually a really nice way to actually sit and study the character designs and the world of Eternia (from this shows vision) properly. There’s a lot of love him and you can tell the creative direction team are massive fans of the brand. All too often characters were on the screen so briefly that you didn’t get to appreciate the designs, and to see them here and be able to also view the other alternate concepts the artists created is a really nice option and provides some enjoyment for fans who wanted that bit more of the characters. Some especially interesting alternate visual ideas for god skeletor, Evil Lyn and the sorceress especially. There’s also some fantastic concept plans for Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain, looking at their scale and layout internally.Information on the characters, their personalities, what drives them or what the creative team was thinking with their ideas is sadly lacking, this is very much a book of character models - though these do evidence they love and attention which the team behind the show put into it. I would have liked to have seen more sketchbook ‘sketches’ of ideas in here but I guess most artists don’t work this way anymore and digital is the only way they work now.I think ultimately the world of He Man is so enormous and there was so much that the creative team wanted to include they they shoehorned things in when perhaps less is more would have been a better approach. Sadly some characters were killed off for no reason other to ‘raaar let’s have some actual death’ in it. Less characters but focusing on characters fans really wanted to see (Stinkor, Faker etc who were never in filmation) would have been more beneficial than so much focus on Teela, Duncan, Adam and Evil Lyn who have all had a wide range of dedicated storylines across various media over the years. If you loved Revelations then you will love this book. If you loved the visuals but had some issues with the series then you’ll still love the book as it really is a nice way to appreciate the design and love the team put into the show. There’s much to like about Revelations, but too much was trying to be included in one go. A new series is headed to Netflix in the near future so I hope the comments of the viewers are listened to and a clearer more balanced storyline and balance of character focus is implemented.Bottom line is - If you loved the show then buy this book, you won’t be disappointed.

Gran bel volume!
Libro dedicato alla recente serie Netflix con bozzetti, immagini, curiosità e spiegazioni. Diviso in sezioni su personaggi, luoghi e mezzi. Davvero ben fatto, come tutti i libri usciti su He-Man sotto l'etichetta Dark Horse.
