How precise/small is the spot over distance? On my generic level, at 40 feet away, the "spot" is a useless, inch-wide blob.

I just checked it at over 40 feet. It's as clear and pinpoint as it is at 5 feet, no degradation of precision.

Does this have at least a magnetic mount? I want to use it for automotive graphics work.

Thank you for your question. The magnet of the GLL 1P Line and Point Laser is on the versatile mount. For further assistance, contact us at 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499) from Mon-Fri 7A-7P CST.

Does it come with a mounting plate?

The Bosch GLL 1P provides greater versatility in leveling and alignment applications with a combination bright line laser projection and point laser. Simple set up using quick leveling with a bubble vial. Together with the built-in vial level and strong magnet, the GLL 1P allows for quick and effortless horizontal and vertical leveling, while easily mounted in various angle applications. Product includes: (1) Mounting Plate, (1) Adhesive Mounting Strip, (2) Thumb Nail Mounts, (2) AAA Batteries

Can this be mounted on a tripod?

Yes. There is a standard 'camera' female thread on the mount unit (black oval pictured).
