A must have for any 40K fan
This is a must have for any 40K fan. I, myself, have just recently gotten into the books (the 'fluff' as it's known) after being a long time fan of the games (tabletop and PC). I'd recommend reading some 40K books before the Horus Heresy (30K) though so that you have a bit more appreciation for the universe, and a bit more insight into the storylines the Horus Heresy is a predecessor for. Personally I'd recommend the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies first.Abnett as the first author for Horus Rising was a great choice, as it sets the tone of the universe and steadily kicks up the pace which is by and large kept the same in the later books despite being from numerous authors. As for the collection itself - it was pretty damn good quality when you consider it's 12 books for $100. The box is sturdy and well printed, though I wish they had used a graphic on it that wasn't the cover art for one of the books (it's the cover art for Horus Rising). Each book is in an individual "shelf" inside the box, and the books themselves are the standard paperbacks (not mass market so they're decent quality themselves as well).

This box set was perfect to kick start my collection again
I ordered this box set, and though it was back ordered twice on me, it was worth the wait.At one point in my life, I owned the first 20+ books that were published in this series (plus countless 40k books), but several moves in a short amount of time left me with less shelf space then i wanted so I foolishly traded them in. This box set was perfect to kick start my collection again. The set I received was a little different than previously posted pictures (Another reviewer showed a smooth black folding box with a golden crest. Mine was a large vertical standing box as pictured now) I will add a photo laterEven more amazingly about this collection is each of the books has the 'gold' foil look to the outside fronts, edging and writing. For those who didn’t know the original runs of the Horus Heresy series were color coded. First printings were gold, second silver, and third and beyond were in bronze. it’s awesome to once again have that lovely gold foil book ends looking back at me.Even if a novice to the wonderful Warhammer 40K universe, this box set is an awesome gift for anyone who loves Military Sci-Fi.

Its a great place to start a new collection if you've never ...
The Horus Heresy Volume 1-12 Collectors BoxsetFor the first time Black Library have consolidated the first 12 books of this ongoing series which takes place in Games Workshops Warhammer 40,000 Universe. The Horus Heresy details the rise and fall of the Warmaster Horus and his turn to the evil forces of Chaos. The Horus Heresy was the first and most devastating civil war in newly forged Imperium and Empire of man. Occurring approximately 10,000 years before the current Warhammer 40,000 time line and lasting over 70 years, the Heresy divided and nearly destroyed the fledgling Imperium and saw many of its favourite sons and its brightest stars fall into darkness. This boxset features the first 12 volumes in this story in paperback with an exclusive additional Whispers of Heresy anthology of short stories as a bonus. Its a great place to start a new collection if you've never come across across the Horus Heresy before or a good collectors boxset to treasure and have presented on display- Im looking forward to adding the next boxset in this series to the first and seeing more of the titles released in this what i would deem an essential buy for any Warhammer 40,000 and Games Workshop Fan

Nice Book Series for those Interested in SciFi
My boyfriend got me interested in this series so I took a chance and got this boxed set. The set is really nice, great condition and shipping was fast. I think the book size is good as well. But these are all thoughts from someone not used to much from the Black Library.I believe Destructa sums up my feelings on the books I've read so far, "The Horus Heresy is well worth anyone's time to get into, if you like epic sci-fi combat and exploring the nature of power and belief." The books I've gotten through so far are well written and very entertaining. I'd recommend them to anyone interested in science fiction. The characters are interested and engaging. Each author adds something a bit different but equally constitutive to the whole. All in all the Horus Heresy is truly a story of epic proportions that's well worth reading.

If you don't like the 40K universe from the games then the novels ...
This series is for people who are already fans of the 40K universe. The books are readable, enjoyable, but they suffer from already having a story that's been told in other material and so they are forced to follow the story already set out for them. Things that would be a major plot twist in other series are known way before hand by anybody who has even a passing knowledge of the universe. If you don't like the 40K universe from the games then the novels would only be a 3 star rating, but for fans they do the job well enough to get 4 stars.
