Unhinged (Necessary Evils Book 1)

You know the monsters that lurk in the dark? No one wants to think about them or acknowledge them very often because it's too real. Too sad. Too dark. Adam Mulvaney and his brothers are those monsters, but with one caveat. They kill the real monsters who hurt and torture innocents. They're the necessary evils in the world. After suffering through the loss of his father, Noah wants revenge and he finds his father's killer: Adam. Only there's a bit of a snag....Noah's father was a monster and now he's bent on uncovering the truth of the past...with Adam by his side. This book was not how I expected. It was actually pretty sweet at a lot of different points that I wasn't expecting. I think Noah's trauma was just....heart wrenching and horrific and I was so glad he had Adam with him every step of the way. This was way more of an insta-type love than I expected, but I found that I still enjoyed it a lot regardless of the missing relationship development. I feel like this book recognized the insta love and did it well enough that I just could accept it. I think the one thing I would want to be different is that I want it to be a bit longer! I want more of this couple and to see them form a deeper bond! Regardless, I'm super excited for the rest of the series and I truly enjoyed this book so much!

Wow
I kept seeing all the Neceassary Evil books recommended in the various bookclubs I'm apart of, but kept putting them off...Well, I finally caved and I'm pleseantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. There's so many layers to the characters and story that you simply fall into it and can't put it down!Though, I must admit I have a few questions...1) What happened to Noah's trailer? In a way, the trailer represented Noah's freedom for his previous life and he was adament about keeping. Now, Adam did mention he could have the trailer moved, but was it?2) And Beth, she was Noah's work BFF, will she make any future appearances or is she now just a footnote in the beginning of Noah's story? She was his only true "friend" - along with her girlfriend - that he allowed into his life, that it's a bummer that nothing else was mentioned of her.All that being said, I do want to mention, that as out there as the ending was, it actually kinda reminded me of the A-Team movie (with Bradely Cooper)... If you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about. :D

5 stars!
5 starsAm I glad I read it? Yuuuuup. Tbh, this book perfectly demonstrates why I enjoy reading (good) dark romances with psychopathic love interests. Adam and Noah's dynamic was *chef's kiss* perfection. James did an excellent job of balancing their power dynamic, both in and out of the bedroom, and their communication is top tier. James seems to use her characters' psychopathy as a means to explore different ways to define what love is to us and how we can express it and not just as a trope thrown in to titillate. So, while Adam's obsession isn't exactly the epitome of healthy attachment, it is exactly what Noah needs, and vice versa. It was really lovely to read. And the Mulvaney family dynamics? HILARIOUS. Thoroughly enjoyable secondary characters that'll make you eager to read their stories.

I want a man like Adam
Is it crazy that i want a man who protects, takes care and makes me smile like Adam does for Noah? This book made me cringe, upset, heated in a good way, and even laugh and all for great reasons. There are dark criminal parts that makes you cringe and get upset but these are all made better by the sexy parts from the crazy relationship that Adam and Noah build together. Who would think I'd fall in love with a psychopath but i seriously would love a man like Adam protecting and taking care of me. Their relationship is something most people dream of having and it's written so well. This book was great and i can't wait to get into the next in the series. But I'd be lying if i didn't say i seriously hope there's going to be another book about Noah and my not so secret dream guy Adam. Lol...😍

hauntingly beautiful
I absolutely loved this story. It is dark, haunting and painful as the truth slowly unfolds about poor Noah’s life and his past. I loved Adam and how once he knew Noah saw the real him, his true nature shines through. His adorably cute mannerisms due to confusion, beyond his comprehensions due to lack of empathy and diagnoses. Then his Absolute and total recognition that Noah is his. The end. Noah was his and he felt it on a cellular level that even if he didn’t understand normal human emotions he loved Noah in his way and it’s almost better. How Noah breaks it down to pick someone just because they recognize them as their other half without all the “love chemicals” clouding judgment made it mean more. Love the brotherly banter. Omg so amazing. Can’t wait for more.

4 intense stars
“You know I’d f---ing tear the world down for you, don’t you?”Firstly, yes this is fiction but for those who like theirs grounded in reality to some degree, this book & I imagine the whole series will be best enjoyed if you can let go of all those expectations.I got Umbrella Academy vibes from this. The eccentric wealthy man adopts children and turns them into a team of vigilantes. Obviously there are different approaches and I'm not saying it is a direct comparison but it definitely has a UA vibe to it if you're familiar with it. Without the superpowers etc.Next, take note of the warnings, this is about a group of clinically diagnosed Psychopaths who have been moulded to "murder for good". There's an edge and darkness to it that is well balanced BUT it does deal with predators of the worst kind. It talks of and implies heavily the abuse, grooming, trafficking and other such awful things of children. The way this book is written you can forget almost how dark it is because of the humour & other things happening. But it becomes a little more focused on those things later on. It's hard to stomach. So just take note of that before going into this book.I liked this book a lot, more than I expected to. The pacing for the most part is pretty good & engaging. Trying to figure out this family dynamic (why all the A names?! Whyyy. This for some reason bothers me) & even the dynamic of Adam & Noah is interesting. It's also weirdly charming, funny and sweet at times. For Adam & Noah, there's actually a level of darkness in both, I think. This isn't like a dark murderer & the sunshine one kinda thing. Each of them carry trauma that they process or don't process in different ways. Adam is the psychopath and we're told plenty of times he doesn't feel. He is incapable of loving even if he has been taught to "act" like he does. Yet, he cares for Noah in sweet and tender ways as well as the more intense ways. I guess it raises the question of love, is it some definitive feeling or the way you show up for someone? (a book about murderers is making me get all philosophical) Also, their dynamic really allowed for great communication and boundaries to some degree. Although make no mistake, they are intensssse. Big time. It happens real quick but Adam is very intense and Noah definitely reacts positively to it. There's rough sex, or at least it's mostly very intense sex between the two with some boundaries being tested. Some face slapping which I could have done without but there it is.“I will disembowel anybody who so much as messes up your hair.”Noah pretended to swoon. “Who says romance is dead?”I definitely would have liked Noah and even Adam to have more connections outside of Each other & Adam's family. Noah had one friend who was quite honestly a throw-away and Adam has no one. Considering Adam and his brother's are supposed to give out the perception of being "normal" and all that and would have given it more depth. But the lack of these things definitely added to the intensity of Adam & Noah's connection. They are very intense it's like “hello. I love your freckles. I am a murderer. You're never allowed to leave me" so it is definitely full on but in their own way they are cute lol.I loved Calliope. I'm really intrigued about the brothers and trying to figure them out. Why is Atticus so angry and grumpy? I need to figure him out. I have suspicions that the twins are gonna be freakkkyyy. Also I think I read in some reviews it seems there's something between Thomas (The father) and one of the (adopted) sons, Aiden. If that's true I'm not sure how I feeeeel about it. In general I'm not sure I like Thomas anyway but there's one scene he has with Noah that absolutely got me in the feelz. Gah. One sentence and my heart hurt for him but I'm still side eyeing him. This is probably down to the comparison of the umbrella academy for me.Not sure how well the rest of the series will work for me but definitely gonna give it a go!

Heartbreakingly great read
Wow, where to start. I guess firstly this is a dark read so make sure you read any trigger warnings and if your good with that then dive straight in. You won’t be disappointed.Adam & Noah...... just wow. I don’t even know where to start with them! I absolutely love them, so unique it’s truly incredible.Noah has had the worst kind of traumas as a child and it’s heartbreaking but he’s an incredible person. And Adam is just what he needs & vice versus. Adam is definitely different but the way he is with Noah.....🥺🥰The story can be quite hard to read as it’s based around the abuse Noah went through but it’s so well written & raw, emotion & steamy too.It will have you hooked from the beginning. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read that I would highly recommend.

Eff me but that was awesome!!!!
Why aren't you allowed to swear in reviews? A good eff word here or there would really let people know when they have struck absolute GOLD in reading terms! This freaking story was just so fantastic I'm actually spluttering trying to write a review that won't spoil things but will convince people to buy/read this book!IMy only gripe is having to wait for the rest - future me is going to have a rollicking good time reading them all in one go when they're all available! Onley, I more than maybe love you!

I cannot recommend this highly enough
I am in awe of any writer that can produce an original story and do it such an explosive manner. I floved this book, Adam and Noah just worked, the story was gritty, sexy and speedy pulse rate inducing and my heart broke for Noah. No ridiculous whiny characters and a family I can’t wait to know more about has me looking forward to the next in the series and has cemented this author as one of my favourites. It’s worth noting that this book was almost completely error free and I particularly enjoyed perusing the Pinterest boards too.

Brilliant!
God i so enjoyed this book! Its got soooo much in it i was absolutely engrossed from start to finish.Such a great plot. I love that it's the first book of many to come. I'm so excited by it i can't wait!So this being book 1 we get the set up. Sometime this detracts from the story of the two MC's because it can get drawn out, but not this one. Its a perfect amount of set up. 7 "Adopted" brothers. Each chosen for their personality traits... Psychos/Sociopaths.Adam is up first. He lacks the capacity to feel any warm fuzzies but that doesn't make him a bad guy. Just a dangerous one i guess. No empathy just his version of logic. I gotta say through all this i still felt him. I felt his love. I felt his caring nature. I felt his protectiveness. But... only towards Noah. He was really kinda sweet to him and it was really endearing.Awww little Noah. I felt for him i really did. Boy did he go through it! But he was so bloody strong. He was broken but he kept going and i was so thankful he found Adam. He needed Adam and all his crazy just as much as Adam needed him. They really were a pair!Honestly love a bit of dark but i don't think its too dark. You know whats going on and what has been done but its not graphic which totally worked.Adam and Noah made me swoon so hard and well the bedroom scenes were yu mm meeee! Absolutely smoking! Pheww yup! But also outside of that too, they were, dare i say? Adorable? Lol i loved them!... Maybe. The rest of the family are in my sights! I can't wait! Each one i know are going to bring something great to the book table! I really, really hope Thomas gets a happy ending too, fingers crossed for that!Cracking start to the series and my first Onley James book! I've just downloaded one of her other series because i just really loved the writing and i wanna binge!Highly recommend!
