Do the strings come pre-tied? Or do they need to be tied onto an item, as opposed to looping the tag through, where you're attaching it?

Not sure I understand the question...the string is attached to the tag and knotted on the end. You can either tie the string to your object or put the string through and stick the tag through the loop.
