Beginner's Norwegian with Online Audio (Hippocrene Beginner's)

This is one of the few books available to start learning Norwegian. The dialogues, grammar explanations and word lists are well-explained, making the book excellent for self-study. The audio available on the website has the vocabulary lists to improve your pronunciation which is important when starting a new language on your own. In conversations and dialogues it is often challenging to distinguish individual words, especially for a beginner. The fact that they also provide audio for the word lists is definitely an added value for beginners. I really enjoyed working through this course and can highly recommend it.

I have several Norwegian courses that I have gone through cover to cover. This one was one of my favorites. I wouldn't say it's best for an absolute beginner--more for a false beginner or someone with some basic knowledge. The dialogs are spoken in very natural conversational speed and with high frequency vocabulary, not the stilted conversations you often see in language books. (I'm a retired ESL teacher.) The speakers speak slightly different dialects based on the written bokmål form. The lessons are very clear and grammar well-explained in English. I especially liked that the dialogs and vocabulary are available as audio files that you can download for practice while you walk or do chores. I got a lot of use out of them. I swear one of the voice actors sounded just like the star of Okkupert. Also the book was at a great price. I have recommended it to many of my online Zoom Norwegian conversation friends, as it was recommended to me. Hope they come out with a second level.
