What makes the bass series better than the HD series amplifiers?

As a tech, there is several key points-

Bass series FR curve is more focused on the low frequency range and stability than the HD series.  The HD series is primarily used for midrange/midbass.  
The HD amplifiers will have a light roll off trickling down in frequency forcing them to start clipping the lower you go in frequency.

Bass series amplifiers are tested at a much lower frequency output vs HD amplifiers guaranteeing their rating for the FR range it is expected to play.
Bass series amplifiers have more filtering than the HD series amplifiers.  This elimates unwanted EMI issues that cause some cheapily made measuring devices from measuring the amplifiers output characteristics.
Bass series amplifiers are more stable at temporal abuse than HD series amplifiers are.   This is not needed on HD therefore would fail quick if not monitored, but on Bass series amplifiers, we can operate as low as 0.3ohm for quick demo sessions and have burped them as low as 0.25ohm back to back without failure.  Please note these operating conditions assume everything about the expected output therefore allow the amplifier to operate within a safe margin of error to prevent failure.
Bass series amplifiers, the larger ones, provide more onboard power supply connections implying to the user that the amplifier is more capable of handling larger amounts of current draw for long periods of time.
Bass series amplifiers are heavier than their HD equivalent and this is because there are more components onboard than the HD that help spread the input load from the power supply and maintain stability with the onboard capacitance.
