Clever, scary haunted house story
What a wild ride! Sunshire Château is a mansion, the biggest in America, and it opens its doors for a lucky group of tourists only rarely. The mansion is dark and ugly and has a history of violence and rumors and scandal. As the tour progresses, lead by the mysterious and hostile Tour Guide, each tourist unearths their own dark passions and see scenes of the dark deeds of the mansion’s “Master.”A very different haunted house story, not quite gothic, not quite a ghost story. It is the slow unspooling of a rich man’s grasping needs and his house that has the same hungers.Amor sprinkles in wonderful revelations of broken hearts and broken trust, a mother’s need to SEE HERSELF beyond her position of “mother” and the hellfire of a woman scorned. This was a fascinating read, with intertwining backstories that never get lost or become overwhelming. There is sporadic gore and horror where I actually gasped and got the goosebumps. With progressively building tension, Amor told her tales and finished the book with a totally satisfying last 20 pages.

Twists and turns
A little slow on the uptake but we’ll worth sticking with it! A look into the morbid, macabre, life of a narcissistic person! Amor paints a very (almost too) descriptive picture for your brain to grasp.

A tour I won’t forget…
The media could not be loaded. Welcome, foolish mortals, to Sunshire Chateau. Please keep your hands to yourself lest you become part of the tour. And please remove your shoes. Two things I want to cover before I get to the normal review stuff:1. Holy freakin’ haunted houses…the cover on this thing! Chad Wehrle killed it. One of my favorite covers for anything, ever. I’m very excited about the upcoming hardcover edition that Cemetery Gates just announced.2. The Foreword for this book is beautiful. I wasn’t emotionally prepared. Now then..We join a tour group as they visit the Sunshire Chateau, an old mansion in New York. The kind of house where no expense was spared in its construction and it craves an audience to show off for. The novel is split up into rooms, just like the tour, as we get to experience the house from different characters’ perspectives.I learned some things about my tastes while reading this; apparently I LOVE haunted house/ghost stories. Yes there are spirits here, but people can be haunted by much more than the dearly departed…past mistakes, the road not taken, regret. We can all relate to those emotions and it doesn’t matter if the character experiencing them is living or dead. For me, I found it easy to care about the cast and was genuinely invested in what came of them.I also loved how Gemma described how the ghosts looked and moved. As I was reading I could SEE them. Now I want a movie version with a script written by her. Internet do your thing. If you’ve read Gemma’s work before, you know. If you haven’t, this is a great place to start.

Great read
A clever take on the haunted house trope which ended up being a great gateway read for all things Gemma Amor (it was my first book by her and I’ve gone on to read two more since then; all worth the time!)

Hauntingly beautiful
Gemma's writing style is absolutely beautiful, despite the macabre subject matter. This is my first time reading her and I am in love. Six Rooms has the same vibes as Stephen King's miniseries 'Rose Red.' I love haunted house stories and this one is definitely in my top 3. Unforgettable.

Haunted house tour guide
So you wonder why the tour guide is so mysterious and has a love\hate attitude toward the mansion that has so many unexplained oddities and illusions. Very interesting read. A couple of times I was confused but overall a good horrific read.

When One Door Closes... Another Door Opens...
No spoilers. 4 stars. Death holds wide its door and we pass from one realm to another. A simple transition... or is it?...So begins the tale of the Sunshire Chateau and its occasional but coveted tour of the many exotic rooms and collectibles...... The very knowledgeable but no-nonsense tour guide will give the tourists a pair of recently laundered slippers (no street shoes allowed)...... and lead the group of 8 people on a tour of the different rooms: from the Reception Hall, upstairs to the Blue Room, Library, Atrium, and finally...The Map Room...One can almost hear the house say: Feed me... and the chateau has a big appetite...When one door closes, another door opens but what happens if one loses one's way between doors? Confusion?...... Without a clear path do those souls just wander?... wander places like the rooms of the Sunshire Chateau?...... mere shadows of people long-gone... like woodsmoke in the air...I liked this version of a haunted house novel. It reminded me somewhat of SLADE HOUSE by David Mitchell. It became a little slow-moving about midway through but the ending evoked Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.

So. Good.
Gemma Amor's writing took me into the Chateau, to explore alongside each character. Vivid descriptions, well developed characters, and an unexpected ending. 100% recommend

Loved this spooky horror!
Who likes a ghost story? Who just loves a haunted house story? I know I do, and Six Rooms does it well - a creepy, mysterious old mansion, a mixed cast of everyday characters, some likeable, some not. As we learn more about them as they tour the stately rooms there are moments of pathos, greed, a need of love and belonging, and perhaps the reader will identify with a particular person? And then there are the ghosts... And their reasons for being there. This is a really enjoyable supernatural tale, it will be hard to put down as it grips you and pulls you into the world of Sunshire Chateau.

Crikey!
I had never heard of this author until i saw an advert for this book. What an amazing find. There are far too many reviews on here claiming that various books are amazing. Well, I have read hundreds of novels and this is one of the best I have ever read. Totally gripping and I had no idea what was going to happen next. This writer is a real find and I can't wait to read more.

excellently creepy and beautifully written
Really liked this. Creepy and meaningful (although if you are looking for full on scares this isn’t for you). Hooked from the moment some old biddies were told to eff off.
