This rod has a center support. It is sturdy, but I'm not sure how long it would resist sagging without it.

I'm not sure what you mean by thick, but you can leave them off entirely.

No I don't think it would look weird. They are pretty basic. I have two and I have one curtain on each. I have two large French doors side by side leading outside. When I open them, I open each off to the side of each so doesn't interfere with my view. Basically my French doors are facing a lake and almost cover the front of my house. Nothing is in the middle. Hope they work for you
