Enter the Dragon [Blu-ray]

Enter the dragon
Movie 11 of 1973 and 11 overall in my journey through films of my lifetime.I watched my fair share of kung-fu on late night TV when I was a child. It was entertaining if not a bit cheesy but I enjoyed it enough to watch almost whenever it was on. As I got older I kept hearing that "Enter the Dragon" was amazing and Bruce Lee was awesome. I can't argue with the later! I had seen so much martial arts to that point I was really never interested. In fact, I really never wanted to see this movie but my journey could not be complete without "Enter the Dragon" as one of my movies. It fits my primary criteria that I have not seen it and that I had heard about it.To be honest it didn't really get past my expectations. Actually the first half of the film did dispel one expectation: it's not nearly as serious as I thought it would be. With a title like "Enter the Dragon" it seemed that it must have had a serious tone. I kept thinking that this movie would have made a great comic book. You could imagine my shock when the main villain is accused of being a comic book villain within the movie! Was the movie really this self aware of its own nature? I respect that it took a less serious tone. I felt bad for rolling my eyes at so many cheesy scenes when, as it turns out, they may have been deliberately cheesy. I consider that to be really awesome quite frankly. The action was very good and there was not as much of it as I thought there would be. I also thought there would be more focus on the tournament but it really wasn't all that present. It probably took up more screen time than I thought but I'm not sure. I suppose they did such a good job with the context that I didn't really notice. Of all the movies of 1973 that I have watched NONE, without question, without a remote rival, have even reached the base of the mountain of the summit that "Enter the Dragon" reaches when it arrives at its conclusion. Simply FANTASTIC ending! Very rare for even some of my favorite films. So after such laudatory effusion why would I only grant a mere three stars? Honestly this movie is just not my cup of tea and that's the bottom line. I wish I could give it two separate sets of ratings: one that reflects my feelings and one that reflects my thoughts. I do have critiques: overall sloppy production, bad acting (by some), editing mistakes, poor directorial choices, lame music and sound, not an overall point that I find compelling (although the Eastern musings on the nature of their art at the beginning was great and I wanted more and more relevance to the overall plot from that). With all of these issues in tow I can't really blame anyone for adoring this movie. I think it's just a rare case of two things not coming together well in my personality and this movie. So the three stars really only reflects what I think about it and if you and I have similar tastes in film then perhaps that's a help to you. I will definitely watch this again one day and I will do so when I'm looking for something more in the frills department. I will abstain from a pro/con list on this one as a more casual reader may take that to be my final take. Also, that short hand list will give a false impression about my understanding of the film: I think it is objectively a really good movie but it doesn't meet my subjective desires. So that's it for 1973! There are no stead fast rules for quantity of movies that I will watch from any year; this year it was 11 movies that were appropriate in my mind without having to watch almost 20,000 movies that IMDB acknowledges for that year. I'm torn as to which one was the best between "The Last Detail" and "The Sting." Both were great. My least favorite was "Serpico" so I will have to watch that again eventually to see if I change my mind. Not sure what will be first for 1974: perhaps "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "The Conversation." I have high hopes for both!

A very nice blu-ray transfer of Bruce Lee's biggest hit
A very nice blu-ray transfer of Bruce Lee's biggest hit. I love this movie and the picture/audio looks outstanding considering it was filmed in the 1970s. I only have a few complaints, but they do not affect the 5 star rating in my opinion.#1 This movie was filmed in the English language, unlike Bruce Lee's previous films, but it still has voice dubbing. There is a scene in the beginning where Bruce Lee's master has his voice dubbed into English and its kind of cheesy. I wish they could have incorporated the actual language used with subtitles, but I understand.#2 This version does not have the documentary "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey" in the bonus features. I highly recommend watching this documentary if you get the chance to. It has unseen footage of Bruce Lee in "Game of Death" and it puts it all together in a short film of epic fight scenes. The original blu-ray version has it, but it was removed in this version. You can find the documentary on youtube though.

European DVD !!! Will NOT play on a U.S. dvd player
This DVD is "encoded for the European market" so it will NOT work on a DVD purchased in the U.S. This is noted but I did not see it. I just wonder why they are even selling in the US???.But if you are here for a review of the movie.... Bruce Lee rules!! One of the best movies ever.

Classic Bruce Lee
Just a good movie. You got people fighting, you got pretty ladies and handsome guys, you got a sinister guy on a private island. What more do you want? Shut your brain off and watch the man punch the other man for a bit.

As soon as I received this Blu-ray, I popped it in and watched it. The picture quality is amazing and the extras are nice as well.

Great print but the soundtrack has been edited/tweaked from the original version.
As a Bruce Lee fan of over 30 years, I have owned his classic movie 'Enter the Dragon' on every format to date. The UK DVD was a huge improvement on the VHS issue, but still had a considerable amount of grain and noticeable print damage. This Blu-ray edition has been nicely cleaned up and looks fantastic. It is the full uncut version of the film and features the two philosophical scenes that were not included in the original cinema release.Sadly, while the sound quality is very good, the English language track has been altered as follows...1) The banquet scene - After Han's speech, the resumed music is different to the original cinema version.2) The museum scene - A short piece of eerie music when Roper sees the bones of Han's hand in a cabinet has been removed. The tense, dramatic music that accompanied Han placing his cat on the guillotine and daring Roper to remove it is also missing.3) When Roper is led out to the arena to fight either Bruce Lee or Bolo, the tournament theme music is missing,4) Roper v Bolo fight - After Roper has delivered the fatal groin kick to his hulking opponent, the picture cuts to a close up of Han's angry face. In the original version of ETD, the sound of another blow being struck was CLEARLY audible, but is NOT present here.Strangely, the foreign language tracks all seem to have the original, unedited score. It's a relatively minor issue, but one that will be very noticeable to older fans of the film. However, this Blu-ray is still the best version of 'Enter the Dragon' currently available and, with a host of extras including 3 documentaries, a vintage featurette and some home footage of Bruce Lee, is an essential purchase for any fan.

Blu-ray Spec Review (2007)
Hmm... where do I start, first of all IF YOU OWN the excellent 2 Disk DVD Special Edition Set of this movie, then KEEP IT. Due to this Blu-ray Edition does NOT have the superb John Little documentary entitled; Bruce Lee; A Warriors Journey on it. Which is kind of annoying, especially since this particular documentary had the excellent reconstruction of Bruce's Game Of Death Film at the end of John Little's documentary.Which to any respectable Bruce Lee Fan was utterly essential to own. But apart from that one admission the Blu-ray disk is a vast improvement on the DVD print of the 2 Disk Special Edition Set. I personally would say throughout most parts of this particular print you can tell the difference from the Blu-ray to the DVD.O' the Blu-ray still occasionally shows a little speckled dirt on it from time to time. So don't expect, for example; the exquisite Blu-ray print of say; The Matrix (1999).I don't own the 40th Anniversary Edition of this movie so I can't give you a comparison to THIS (2007) Blu-ray Edition disk compared to the 40th Anniversary Edition disk print.I hope this review has been helpful.

Bruce Lee gets a well deserved tribute.
This is by far the best Bruce Lee movie and this BR edition pays a great tribute to the martial arts legend. The image and sound are great respecting the age of the movie. There are some good extras, several audio tracks and subtitles. A must have in my opinion, so i recommend it 100%. Another great movie on my collection. βΊοΈ

Enter the Bes Dragon.
This has to be one of best version of the Enter the Dragon movie and I have seen it the original golden harvest film. The censor cut out the rape scene and the bloody murder of Jim Kelly as well . But the rest is near the original movie. The final end fight scenes with the villain is a less bloody and gore than I recall. Bruce Lee was suppose to get banged up and cut up before the finally kills the villain, sadly the censor ruined the whole scene but not showing us at that point Lee was loosing the fight and a luck, in making the final last desperate kick saves him from certain death. Hence the title the Dragon,( Bruce unofficial Title) as he has a final sting in his tail. A good classic messed by the censor when it could have been a great classic.

Good BD, but could`ve been better
I have seen this film many times on DVD. I think it is a good film with good fight scenes. I think the character named Williams is good.Picture Quality: 4/5I think this Blu-ray is an improvement over the DVD. I think the it looks good. I think the colours and such looks very nice, compared to my DVD.Audio Quality: 3/5Cheap and lazy Warner Bros didn`t even make a lossless 5.1 audio track. We only got the standard, and highly compressed lossy version from the previous DVD. If it was up to me, it would be mandatory to have every BD that is released to have a lossless audio track. It does sadly not work like that, as you can see. I think this film would`ve sounded better if we got a lossless audio instead of the common lossy one. The DD 5.1 sounds just ok in my opinion. It lacks good bass from most the punches and kicks.Film: 4/5Overall: 4/5
