Exciting and informative book
Jason is a teenage boy who is determined to go to Alaska and strike it rich during the gold rush. He encounters many fascinating people along the way including Jack London. Be sure to read the author’s notes because he gives a great deal of background information about the gold rush.

Alaskan approved! Great read
As a born and raised Alaskan with experience in gold mining and prospecting this book really touches on the adventure and hardships that is life in the wild north. Well written and inspiring with the determination and strength that all young men should have in the North

Just when the story picks up, it falls flat ...
Even though I'm way out of the age group for this book, I do enjoy reading young adult books from time to time. This one ... eh, not really my cup of tea. I was really excited to read my first book about the gold rush, but this story didn't deliver. I found parts of the book boring with no spark. While Jason was portrayed to be a responsible, driven young adult, at times he sure lacked common sense. At other times, Jason seemed wiser beyond his age. I finished this book because it's short and an easy read, but I wasn't into it.

Read this book back in Middle School so I had some nostalgia. I love this book! And came in great conditions!

Not appropriate for young readers
This story has potential for 16 and older. But please, if you are a middle school, 6th grade teacher, stop using it as a book to teach from! It’s a difficult read for most 11 year olds and quite frankly, it’s not appropriate. They can learn about the the struggles of a gold rush without having to endure the thoughts of crazy people drowning dogs and blowing their heads off! Our world is crazy enough so let the kids be young and innocent longer!

Great book
This is a wonderful boy - dog story. It gives a good history of the Alaskan gold rush. Boys and some girls ages 9 to 12 would enjoy reading it.

Usual high standard research and drama with a deep feel for nature and other creatures
I bought this to cheer myself up whilst enduring shingles. It helped. This is the first in a series of two. It is the story of a boy who decides to join his brothers in the Yukon gold rush. Getting to the Yukon was incredibly difficult for the many people who attempted to do so and, as usual, author Will Hobbs, makes us feel as if we are watching the horses die, working with dogs, carrying extraordinary weights, half freezing to death, starving, undergoing surgery without anaesthetic. There is none of the quaintness of bad history; this is action, high values, humour and optimism.
