Many shades of grey.
The book concentrates on the National Galleries of Scotland print collection. Perhaps because of this, it has the feel of an exhibition catalogue. Not exactly a glossy, eye catching, zing-a-ling bunch of images but then it is trying to cover a huge time span and just about every popular printmaking technique going. I was a bit disappointed in the detail given to the explanation of the techniques. You will not be turned into a printmaker by reading the book but you will be able to at least sound knowledgeable on the subject. There are one or two astounding images, e.g. the Veil of St Veronica by Claude Mellan with an explanation of the amazing skill involved. Or Bassano Bridge by C H Mackie which has more subtlety than I would have thought a woodcut would allow. It is a good text book for anyone interested in the subject but overall a little lacking in eye appeal .
